Hi all, I purchase an old Viscount caravan a year ago, I have spent countless hours renovating it. The time has come to get it registered and I can’t seem to find the VIN number, I believe the previous owner had a new draw bar installed which then lost the VIN number. My question is where do I go from here with no VIN, no rego papers.

Hi Mitch, Your van wouldn’t have had a vin number, they only came out in 1989 for new and unregistered vans. Your Viscount would have had a chassis number comprising of a letter and 4 numbers welded on the side of the A frame. Vin numbers are 17 numbers and letters stamped on the A frame.I think you will have to go to the rego office and ask what steps you need to take from here. Sorry not to be able to help any more Cheers hughdeany

Ddepending which state you are in? generally you can obtain a one day permit to take the van on the road to have it weighed & checked out at a registration office. Not all registrars are able to take on registration checks. As Hughdeany advised ring your local office.

Hi Mitch95, In addition to the info provided by other Forum members above, you may find the following post on the new VIN processes helpful: Click hereThe important thing to note is that there is a category for caravans 25 years old or more, and a special process for those vans. It is probably worth reading through the information before talking to the rego authorities because it may help you to understand what they will ask you to do. However, a few people who I have been in contact with and are going through the process of obtaining a VIN and registration for their van, say that the state rego authorities still seem a bit confused themselves, so you may have to persevere and be prepared to keep asking questions. Good luck with it all. Don Ricardo
