Hello, we bough this van and used it as a spare room for a few years. We have spent some time getting it ready to take on holiday. Now we have begun the registration process it seems very complicated, we need a VIN from infrastructure Australia. We need to try to find the ATM weights to apply through the ROVER system. The number plate does not yield any information from VIC Roads and they are not forth coming with help. The Rover man I spoke with said that if I could find details of the loaded allowance we could continue with the application without needing a VASS engineers assessment (that we cannot afford). Is there anyone that could help, she is a 15ft van, what we believe is a Viscount? We need something that details a ATM. Thank you for reading, fingers crossed someone can help us.

Hi sarahhanna, Your van isn’t a Viscount,it’s a Newlands, otherwise known as a Rambler,Scenic or Glida, wooden framed ( Viscounts are aluminium framed) If you look through the Down History Lane section under Newlands you will see many like yours. The only way to get the weights is to weigh it and have an engineer check the weight carrying capacity of the wheels, tyres axle and springs befor you go back to the rego office. Have you had anyone check the axle and springs? Did the rego office give you any names that could check for you? Good luck, Cheers hughdeany

As Hughdeany suggests if the van has been sitting for years there are no short cuts, perhaps the tyres are over 5 years old (now outdated in Qld, not sure of Vic) brakes & bearings will certainly need servicing.
I would contact a mobile caravan mechanic that can service & issue a roadworthy. Well done on your first post. Cheers Mustang

Thank you, Sorry I did get the wrong name of the van...I actually thought it was a Franklin van? We have had work done underneath the van will check requirements on tyres. An engineer report cost upward of $1000. The man at infrastructure suggested ask Google for the specifications to avoid having to have it engineered. It has not been modified, did vans of this age come with loaded weight specifications when they were new? Thank you for your help. Cheers Sarah

Hi Sarah, Back in the day van weights were guesstimated,1cwt per foot,no one worried about axle weights, tyres etc,but since the reno bug caught on and people renoed by putting house furniture and lots of heavy wood in their vans, they now have to have all these new regulations adhered to. There have been a lot of people and vans that have come to grief on the highways with overweight vans,so hopefully doing it properly from the start will stop all of that ( at least the ones that are being registered. Have you looked for your van in the Down History Lane section? You will see it’s definitely not a Viscount.😉 Cheers hughdeany

Thank you hughdeany. I did look in the history. This van actually has the name WANDA on it so I followed the trail to read about that. My partner has spent alot of time under this van and inside making her ready and safe to be on the road, as well as his Leyland P76 to be ready to tow her! I have just imported and registered a 1972 mini so I know that processes that involves engineering is lengthy and costly. When I applied for the Mini import they also wanted a weight and I was able to find one from a classic mini page and use that. I was hoping that there would be something similar for our van ( and the ROVER man said that would be adequate) and then we could get the other weights done locally. We have not modified it. I understand the safety aspect of over loading trailers and see it on the road too! Is there any chance I will find a document of a similar van to ours with its Loaded weight recorded? Or am I just dreaming? Thank you for your time in replying, Cheers, Sarah

Hi again Sarah, Unfortunately in VIC older vans only have the tare on the rego certificate( that’s why they are now changing this)and most people back then didn’t even know about weights. Maybe you could try a local trailer builder who could tell you what your atm could be with the undercarriage you have now.I would say your tare weight would be between 950-1000 kg.I have a lightweight bondwood the same size that is 940 kg and a 15 ft Viscount that is 980 kg. Cheers hughdeany
