You say ''NO CAR LIKE A MOPAR'' I say Thank god for small mercies. Though I do admit they're better than Fords.

Gidday Shultzy
Fantastic to see another Val has joined the ranks. Being a new member myself, I am a little confused as far as insurance and public liability etc is concerned, in reference to vintage cars towing vintage vans. As you fall in that area with your Val and the tear drop, maybe you can give me some answers.
To avoid being long winded here, I was advised by a caravan guru, here in Queensland, that my Valiant , towing a van is not legal anymore, stating that any vehicle made prior to 1989, if involved in an accident while towing a van, the lawyers would throw the book at me. I found this quite confronting and have searched all areas possible in reference to vehicles towing anything, and have come up with only, that if any vehicle regardless of age, (although it doesn't say that), conforms to the manufacturers manual and tows a trailer that is within the manufacturers guide lines..........there is no problem, regardless of age. My vehicle is fully registered, has all the correct heavy duty additions as per the original towing information...2000kg, a tow bar made by Hayman Reece to suit 2000kg. I cannot see a problem here. My question to all here is, your Val is a lot older than mine (1976), and with you towing towing a vintage tear drop .....have you encountered a problem with legalities in reference to the above? Thanks Schultzy, and I will continue to search the web to see if I can come up with some light on this subject. Personally myself I feel there is a bit of scare mongering went on with this particular conversation. Cheers Greenie

Happy new year to all forum members, Now to put a cat amongst the pigeons to answer greenies question suzann just got off the phone from our insurer SHANNONS and they told her that our vintage caravan even though it is fully registered is not covered by our car insurance the only things that our insurance will cover are box trailers and car trailers etc. They stated that there are no legalities from towing a vintage van behind your older automobile so the story that greenie has been told appears to be nothing more than a load of bull#### as mentioned by dennis aka jailbar. i will mention that they were keen on insuring our 1941 BREN GUN carrier ;D ;D maybe dennis this should go into another thread? cheers schultzy ;D

Greenie I think your "guru" is ballsed up and mistaking the requirement for cars built and towbars fitted after I think 1-8-88 to have a compliance plate on the towbar stating the maximums for ballweight and total towing load. There are a couple of variations to the info on the towbar but that is basically the requirement.
The ADR's state the maximum towlimit to be the lower limit of vehicle manufacturer or tow equipment and where there is no manufacturers limit and it cannot reasonbly be obtained, then they "suggest" 1 1/2 times the towcars tare weight as being a reasonable limit.

hello kb's
i rang shannons to insure our van and they said that they didn't insure them. i didn't mention that i had the car insured with them, but now that you say they will insure the van as an addition to the car insurance, i'll try them again when the policy is due. thanks for the info.

Gday guys and dolls I will start by clarifying that you can get insurance for your vintage van only if your car is insured thru them as geoff & jude have just mentioned it appears as if we were ill informed as usual ;D, they appear to even have differant categories ,i.e. bondwood built{ESPECIALLY FOR REDDO}, ;D ;D also teardrops as well . The over the phone qoute for comprehensive insurance for our teardrop for an estimated value of $7000.00 was $103.79 per year this was thru shannons. Thanks Dosse for your comments re the valiant we are both looking forward to catching up at Fort Bribie ;D TTFN schultzy.

Thanks to all
Appreciate your input . I figured that the information I got was a little in your face. Have to agree with all. Going to talk to the technical guys from RACQ and check out the ADR and have a gas bag with Shannons.
Thanks again for your support.
Cheers Greenie

Well ....... the Val had a bit of a fight with a truck on Ipswich road back in May and the Val and my shoulder lost, The Val was a right off and my shoulder had a opp on Tuesday so it should be OK. We were lucky we were in the Val as the truck would have just run over a new car. Suzann and Matt

That's not a write off, it's a "we don't want to pay that much to repair it" If you are with Shannons, you get to keep it. Find a decent panel beater and get it sorted. A fellow Model T driver was hit in a roundabout by a young impatient "driver" and was written off. Got the payout, got the car, got the parts, now as good as new.. I've never been a fan of Valiants , but if they are as good as everyone says, surely it must be worth saving?

We are with Shannon's....... and they did pay out, very quickly. The quote was $9,860 to fix her. I sold her for $2,000 so we did very well when you add the pay out from Shannons. The damage was very bad, its all the things you cant see in the photo that cost the most to fix. The man who has her now will fix her. We were thinking of selling her and getting something else anyway, so one could say it was good timing. The man we took it to asked me if I wonted him to fix it and I said no so it was written off. The police said we were lucky we had a Val and not a new car. The truck would have just run over us in a new car, not dragged us along with him like he did. The Val saved me from much worse injuries. Had my shoulder fixed last week and that was the only injury we go. Suzann
