Hi everyone we have not long purchased a 12 ft Franklin regent to use as a camp van on our farm a few nights in and we love it! We are now thinking of registering it after a Reno. When we started to enquire about blue slipping the van a chassis number is needed. Unfortunately the draw bar has been replaced at some stage. Would the chassis number be any where else on the van? what is the weight approx as we are wondering about brakes they could be a good idea even if they are not legally required. thanks all help appreciated.

Hi Swish,
The only usual place for the serial number on a Franklin is on the drawbar unfortunately. Some people have found the serial number for vans built by other manufacturers written in pencil inside cupboards and under the table, etc. I'm pretty sure that's not something Franklin did, but you could have a poke around inside, just in case.
If you haven't got the serial number, then you can get a VIN issued prior to registration and you'll be ok with that. You'll also need to know the year your van was built. The serial number would tell you that, but in the absence of that if you post some photos of your van one of us can probably make an educated guess at the year if the van is pretty original.

G'day Swish,
Great photos. I reckon you've hit the jackpot!
I interpret "12'R STD" to mean '12 ft Regent Standard', and I'm almost certain "6773" is the serial number.
From 1965 to 1973, Franklin used the following format for its serial numbers "xxx-y" where 'y' is the last digit of the year and 'xxx' is the production number for that year. The production number was always separated from the year by a '-'. After 1973 Franklin changed the format by using a letter at the beginning of the number to represent the year, followed by the production number without any '-' in between.
In your case I think the serial number of your van is actually "677-3". Which would mean that your van was built in 1973, and was the 677th van built by Franklin that year. If you were a Franklin worker just scribbling the number on components to keep track of them, you would probably just write "6773" because everyone would know what it meant.
Hope that helps?
