When I was researching timber for the framing of furniture, everyone recommended Meranti to me. I found that it's about half the weight of an equivalent piece of pine, and very nice to work with - easy to cut and straight grained.
If you're in Melbourne, about the only place I could find that had it was Tile Importers in Clayton. They have a fair bit in stock of the 42x18mm

When I built my Cino Vardo I used treated pine house stud 70x35mm ripped down to 45x35mm. I priced Meranti but it was twice the price.

When I built my Vino Bardo I used treated pine house stud 70x35mm ripped down to 45x35mm. I priced Meranti but it was twice the price. Interesting... I paid $1.89 per metre for Meranti, the equivalent sized pine from my local big green shed was about $3.90 per metre. I haven't checked the equivalent cost of ripping down 70x35mm though.

Wow! OP with those prices, it's a no-brainer really! I ripped my studs down with a $50 Aldi table saw!!! Do you have any pictures of what you're intending to build?
