Hello 👋 first time poster here! I have just purchased a coronet caravan. It could be late 70s I think or 80s but would love if someone might know and can help me identify the year and the model. Also we are unsure if the inside is original or has been renovated and as we are renovating we wanted to ask if the cushions are original and if someone might want them as they are in good condition. We don’t want to do the wrong thing and throw out something of value to someone else.

Hi and welcome emilyanne, Your van is a Coronet Champion, the cheap and cheerful family van they bought out in about 1971,yours looks about 1974. The interior looks original except for the table and the cushions were vinyl, yours look to have the tops covered in velvet? They are wooden framed and prone to rot under the side mouldings, just something to be aware of, Hope this helps Cheers hughdeany

Thanks so much for the information hughdeany!! I have a close up of the cushions as I don’t think they have rope on them. But they definitely have velvet and buttons. Do you think they are original and someone would find value in it? As we will be replacing, but I don’t want to throw them out if someone else may want them. We are completely pulling it out to frame and checking - so definitely appreciate the heads up! Would love any other suggestions too!

Hi again, Sorry I meant tops of cushions! I have amended my post. The cushions still look like the tops have been covered in velvet with no piping around the edge, that’s how Coronet did them. Look in other sections of this forum to see what and how others have done things, there is hours of entertainment and hundreds of vans to look over. Cheers hughdeany

Hi Emilyanne, I have a 1968 Coronet Champion, different shape to yours being an earlier model. I found the date of manufacture, in weld, inside the tow bar, just behind the tow coupling of my caravan. Happy Caravanning.

Hi Emilyanne, That one isn’t a Coronet,it’s a copy with a different shape, non Coronet aluminium and different interior building system. Possibly a write off at some stage ( was a guy in Ballarat that rebuilt damaged vans) or a caravan repairer built it in their down time to on sell. Looks to be a very nice well built van. Don’t worry if the rego says Coronet,it happens all the time with vans where people and the rta don’t have a clue of brand or age! It looks to be about 1975-76 going by colours and fittings. Hope this helps Cheers hughdeany

Thanks so much Hughdeany - very interesting! It has the same layout inside as ours so we assumed it was definitely a coronet. How do you know it’s not? Is it just the shape on the outside?

Hi Emilyanne, The shape is a dead giveaway to me,and that layout was used for many years in all brands as the top selling family van of it’s time,so plenty around. The build quality is different to Coronet,as is the aluminium profile ( they never used those planks) Plenty of vans were built by repairers in down time, and they all built the most popular layouts of the time.Does it have a chassis number and is it registered as a Coronet?

Ok yep thank you! That makes sense, what makes you think it was possibly a write off? This info is great - really appreciate it!

Hi again, Over the years lots of people have bought written off vans, stripped back the chassis and rebuilt a van on there, some did and some didn’t have chassis numbers. There was a man in Ballarat that got hold of lots of old vans and rebuilt them to a very high standard, the outsides looked like a conventional Viscount,Franklin, coronet etc,but the insides were beautifully finished,of which this could be one.He was one of the good ones, for the past few years there have been very dodgy people that buy an old van, titivate it inside and out, cover the rot with paint and call it a well known brand and on sell to unsuspecting buyers,it’s been happening even more during covid,by the look of it your friends van is one of the lucky ones. Cheers hughdeany

Oh and yes, chassis number on the draw bar and also it is registered as a coronet from my understanding. But it does seem to be in great condition, so that’s the main thing for them!

Hi all, I am adding on to another related thread again, but continuing my conversation with hughdeany from yesterday, I bought the coronet (!!! 😀) and now want to find an annex for it. It had one, but gone missing. Wondering whether i could use my 72 viscount one? It has vertical rails though, the coronet has twisty fasteners? Maybe not? Sorry one photo went sideways, but can still see fasteners!
With thanks! Hi again, Over the years lots of people have bought written off vans, stripped back the chassis and rebuilt a van on there, some did and some didn’t have chassis numbers. Hi again and congratulations, Shame about the annex! You will need to measure along the curve of the roof to make sure it will fit,and then the distance to the outside of your window frames for the side walls,if it all measures up it will fit.You will have to find a motor trimmer that can fit the fasteners to the canvas,or put rope tracks on the Coronet. Hope this helps Cheers hughdeany

Fabbo - thanks so much! I’ll need to find out what a motor trimmer does to find one, but I’m sure I can do that 😊😊. Thanks again for all your help!
