My new VV has vacuum brakes. I have read what I,ve found on the site but I,m wondering what is the weight limit on vans in nsw before brakes are required and if required how much hassle and cost involved setting elec brakes up on an underslung axle?

hi jeff anything over 750kg requires brakes in nsw. if it has a tandem axle it must have electric brakes. the best way to fit electric brakes is to give camec [ www.camec.com.au/ ](or another van axle company) the drawing and have them manufacture a complete new axle and hardware for your van. costs about $750 and having the drop is no problem. you also need to fit a handbrake coupling and a brake controller. takes about an hour to fit the new axle with absolutely no problems involved in the fit. geoff

Hey Jennison, Should I be the first person here to say that those vacuum brakes.....wait for it.... SUCK! ;D Go the Camec option, i made a post some time ago about my mechanic's view on brakes and the pro's of electric brakes. The best bit, in an emergency, when your tow car (non abs) starts skidding, you lose some of the resistance that helps push and hold mechanical brakes on, the electrics keep working. If by chance, the power fails, in Vic, they recommend run away brakes (compulsory over a certain weight) that automatically apply themselves from a separate battery power pack)... Cheers Chris
