Hi Wanchan, Welcome to the forum.
When your van was made the brakes would have been very advanced. Now, well we live in a faster world, when it comes to safety I don't think you can put a price on it.
Your quote is including a fair percentage for labour, you may be out of your comfort zone to do it yourself, but that is what most members do here. I would only fit electric brakes for peace of mind.
There are utube videos, help here. A trailer brake shop will supply you with all you need, maybe even some advice, google your area. You should be able to purchase most parts for about $600. Cheers

Welcome to the forum OP. My understanding is that in any state, trailers over 750 kg tare weight need to be braked. Perhaps you need to check that out. Regardless, "safety first" is a good motto.

Is electric or hydraulic brakes actually required? Surely it can be done with override brakes - it is only 900kg..

Hydraulic brakes are an over-ride system.

Cheers Hi mustang, Thanks for the recommendation. I think I could do it if the 4 holes dimensions are standard on my van. I may get someone weld the coupling plate on my van for me before installing the brake system.

Hydraulic brakes are an over-ride system. Yes I understand that hydraulic brakes are an over-ride system, but so is a cable over-ride system - and much cheaper. Cable over-ride brakes are the default braking system on most trailers/vans under 2 ton. I personally prefer electric brakes. Greg
