My house mate obtained a 1958 Modern as her next project a while ago, which, unfortunately she has to let go. Recovered from bush, it is the rolling chassis, and body. No windows. No lining. The wheels/axles have all been attended to - it is towable. (It has been relocated and towed OK) It has the door, hatch cover, water tank and roof vents. We were going to replace the floor - one section was semi-removed when we got it and a start has been made on cleaning and priming the chassis, which is in OK condition - apart from the usual surface rust. No wiring etc. Currently stored under cover. May be some ply lining sheets as well. Photos taken just after she got it. Would like $850 ono. Hi Jonl,
That's an interesting Modern your house mate has for sale. It's a bit different to any other Modern we've seen on the forum, as far as I can remember.
For what it's worth, based on the design, I think it might be a bit later than 1958. The van is very different in shape and design to, and much more 'modern' than the 1958 photos of Modern caravans posted on the Modern thread in the 'Down History Lane' section. In addition, with the bulkhead above and the bulge below the front window, and the inset front window, your house mate's van is much more like the vans built in the very early 1960's.
The 'American' style cladding on the bottom half of the van wasn't used on vans built in the Eastern states until around 1962 or 3, so that could normally suggest that the van wasn't built until then. BUT it seems that WA-based van manufacturers, such as Modern and Barravan, adopted some types of cladding before Eastern state manufacturers. That seems to have been one of the characteristics of WA-based van manufacturers. For example Heidelberg's louvre windowed Modern from the late 50's shown on the DHL thread also has the 'American' style cladding.
So, in summary, adding 2+2 and maybe coming up with 5, I reckon your house mate's van is probably early 60's.
If it's ok with you I'll copy the photos to the DHL Modern thread because, as I said, it's a model we haven't seen before.
Good luck to your house mate with the sale.
