BATTEN CARAVANS
Manufactured by Mr W J Batten, 93 Wellington Street, Launceston, Tas Advertisement for the Batten caravan published in the Launceston Examiner on Tuesday, 2 October 1934 (page 3):(Source: National Library of Australia nla.gov.au/nla.news-article51886796 ) Another early van from Tasmania, with the advert providing a detailed description of the Batten caravan. The drawing indicates that it had quite strong English design cues. Interesting also to read that it was another caravan with leadlight windows, confirming that such windows were quite a popular trend in 1930's vans. Note that the stove was 'encased in an asbestos locker', probably a feature we wouldn't rate so highly now! Perusing other adverts placed by the manufacturer, Mr W J Batten, it appears that he ran a hardware and shopfitting business in Launceston during the 30's. Don Ricardo
