RAMBLER CARAVANS
Manufactured by Rambler Caravan Co
28 Britten Street, Glen Iris, Victoria
Over the years there have been several separate and independent manufacturers who have produced caravans under the 'Rambler' brand name. These include caravan manufacturers located in:
Glen Iris in Victoria from 1947 to approx 1952 (this thread)
Preston in Victoria from 1966 onwards - click here
New South Wales - click here
In addition, several other caravan manufacturers have also used the 'Rambler' name for some models of their vans.
Hi all,
We know very little about the Rambler caravans which were produced in the late 40's and early 50's in Glen Iris, Victoria, apart from a few short adverts published in the Melbourne Age newspaper, which I have accessed through www.newspapers.com
As indicated above, the Glen Iris firm was one of three caravan manufacturers that built and/or sold caravans under the 'Rambler' name in the vintage era. Given that one of the firms was located in NSW, and that the two Victorian firms were located in different places in Melbourne and produced vans a decade and more apart, it seems almost certain that the three firms were independent of each other without any links between them.
The first advert in The Age for the Glen Iris Ramblers was published in July 1947, indicating that the firm was in operation at least by then. The advert tells us only that the vans were 3 to 4 berth, reliable and 'keenly priced':

An advert placed in March 1949 tells us a little more, but not much! The caravans were produced by the Rambler Caravan Co, and apart from being reliable and 3 to 4 berth, had all conveniences, various bunk set ups and were airy. They were priced at £215.
(Source: The Age, Wednesday, 20 March 1949, page 8)
Although the 'various bunk set ups' suggests there may have been several layouts available, it sounds as if there was only one size produced.
Similar brief line adverts were published in The Age and also the Melbourne Argus newspaper from July 1947 through to the early 50's. The final advert for the Glen Iris Ramblers in The Age was published in June 1952, and tells us no more than the previous ones:
(Source: The Age, Saturday, 21 June 1952, page 20)
The fact that there were no more adverts published, suggests that the Rambler Caravan Co may have stopped production in the middle of 1952, but of course they may just have found that newspaper adverts weren't a useful way of marketing their vans and kept producing them. But at this stage we have no more information about the company.
Unfortunately we haven't yet seen a Glen Iris Rambler caravan on the forum, or at least not that we have recognised, so we don't know what they looked like. Nor do we know who might have been behind the Rambler Caravan Co. If anyone has any information on these caravans, it will be great to hear what you can tell us.
