I am maintaining a 1968 Harris caravan for my daughter. She has a coffee machine in it and the suspension is looking sad on the machine side of the van (driver's side). I tried to get a new spring and it appears they don't make them like they used to (size-wise). Do any of you know of a generic spring that fits?

If the passenger side is OK, it may be the coffee machine is too heavy for that side. I would check the exiting spring for broken leaves/damage, otherwise you may need to locate a spring works to have another made to match the weight?

Thanks Mustang. Seems obvious that it is the machine, but none of the leaves seem to be broken. If I could get heavier springs the same length, I'd be chuffed. I was just wondering if anyone knew what springs Harris used (Holden, Falcon, etc. that might fit the bill). Perhaps I could wander around a wreckers yard with my tape measure. The other alternative is to alter the position of the hangers and use modern springs. Has anyone had this problem before?

hi, you could try and get a set of helper springs, which are 2 or 3 larger leafs that fit under and are attached without removing the existing springs.... usaually used on utes and wagons to carry more weight..

Give Illawarra Springs a call 02 42761255 they are at Port Kembla NSW. I have used them many times. You mark your old springs LH and RH. Note the distance between the axle and chassis on each side with the van on the ground not jacked up. Jack up the chassis of the van until you have the height as you would like it, note the new distance between the axle and chassis on each side again. Send this information and maybe a couple of photos of how the shackles currently sit. They can reset each spring to suit the side it came off and even make allowances for more weight on one side or the other. When they send them back make sure you refit RH to RH and LH to LH. Easy!!!
