Hi folks. Well I need some advice please on how to adjust the overrun brakes on a 64 Viscount Valiant? I've had new bearings put in the hubs, got new bonded brake shoes and the drums machined. I took plenty of photos before taking these apart so have got the brakes etc back on the backing plates. I've worked out that there is an adjustment in the top part of the shoe by winding out the grub screw adjuster on the backing plate. Is there also an adjustment at the bottom of the shoes? What's the process for setting the brakes correctly? I've put a new bottle screw on the pulley on the cable from the brakes to the main hitch but I'm not sure how to adjust these correctly. Does anyone have the procedure please? I will add photos on this thread tomorrow. Many thanks Mike Here are the photos of the brakes: Old brakes: Adjuster: Nice new brakes:

There will likely be only one adjustment for each wheel. Start by disconnecting the handbrake cable. With the wheel off the ground tirn the shoe adjustment until you cannot turn the wheel then back the adjustment off until you can turn the wheel. If you have new linings it is OK to have a small amount of drag. Reconnect the cable with about a finger thickness clearance between the lever and coupling. If you have done it right, connecting the cable should not cause the brakes to drag on the drums. Koala

Koala, thank you for your advice - adjustments all done and new hubs fitted - wheels back on and mobile again. Cheers Mike
