Hello all warning : No humour. Just sharing some info on a recent annexe fitting exercise I recently purchased a 12ft Viscount 8 berth pop top van. Shock horror you might say!!!!!. But read on there was a reason for this. i found the van at a garage sale ( asking $300 unregistered which included a 3 way fridge , gas stove and canvas damage at either end where the beds pull out ) i bought it for $250 . I figured the fridge would have to be worth that on its own and the plan was to pull the fridge out and on sell the van. When i got it home and set it up i unearthed a fairly new (used twice i am told) 3.6m X 2.1m canvas annexe. The Just Croozn has 18 press studs/pins screwed into the roof along the left side just behind the aluminium edging. The original annexe would have attached to these studs like the old ute tarps. i thought about getting an upholsterer to modify the annexe and fit the eyelettes, but the thought of climbing up there and stretching the tarp on and off the stud was all too much for me. The annexe attached to the roof of pop top van via a "sailtrack" which was dead flat. i removed the track with some apprehension that i would have trouble bending the track to suit the curved 9'6"bondwood roof profile. At best i thought i would be able to coax and screw the track part way around the tight radius at the front of the van and most of the way down the back of the vans gradual radius without too much trouble. I figured if i couldn't get it to fit the full length i could shorten it up and use an extra annexe pole at either end of the van to support the annexe corners. End result was i managed to fix the whole 12' of the rail from just above the front window right the way down to just above the clearance lights at the back. the annexe which has rope sewn into the edge slid through the sailtrack no worries. I would have thought bending the rail around roughly a 18" radius would have distorted the track and closed the slot. The annexe comes down to about "hip hieght" at the rear which offers a lot of protection from the elements as well as some privacy while i am sharing a beer with the Roo . it is just above head hieght at the front. bearing in mind that the van roof now that i have raised the suspension is about 7'6 tp 8' off the ground and allows for plenty of "fall' to the outside edge of the annexe .The van access door which hinges from the left side clears the roof without need for a wheel on the top edge to prevent rips in the roof. i am using adjustable steel poles at the moment ( Yuk) but plan on making up some original timber poles. Next step will be to get rid of the crappy yellow nylon ropes and make up some hemp ( no not marijuana ) guy ropes. Some ppl might say i am going to the extremes with the poles and ropes while the sailtrack is not original. i figure i am better off with the track system as it is 50 times quicker to set up than climbing up and down ladders pushing eyelettes onto studs. Plus it will offer better water and wind sealing. I have taken a few happy snaps of the van with annexe set up and will bypass another attempt at photostuffit and forward them on to Ditzy, Jim, Will or someone to whack on this thread. BTW... the mate bought the van with the fridge still in it for what i paid for it .... so even though i didnt get to keep the fridge i did manage to score a free annexe, sailtrack, two new 8' x4' brattice tarps, six poles 2 dozen steel pegs and a stack of ropes......... Cheering I say ;D ;D ;D Reddo from the far shadier side now. N.M.A.B.R

Hey Reddo, that is obviously an absolute steal and from a garage sale of all places! I assume from what you said that it is just an annexe roof without walls. That is exactly what I am wanting to put on my van. It will be good to not get sunburnt while drinking..... must start going to garage sales.. must start going to garage sales......

he, he, he hey John Thanks for the offer. i will run the pix off the camera through Kodak easyshare and get them over to you "shortly". Mr Humpty The mate has decided he isnt gunna do anything with the van and will probaby sell it. dunno how much but i will find out and if it is no more than say..... $500 i will let you know. Earlee yes the annexe is roof only. I will use the brattice if things get too breezy or too wet. wouldnt want the just croozn roo catchin' a cold would we!!! Jailbar I can relate to the school day antics . i was often in a similar situation and we are still getting cautions today. I have always been a bit rebellious and have nurtured my sense of humour since childhood. It has got me though a few family tradgedys as well as a divorce( losing thousands $$$$$$$ to someone that has never worked a day in thier life is no laughing matter . ) No ammount of cautions or threats have mellowed me in the past and none will in the future. i believe it is our Aussie culture to have a joke and "go against the grain " on occassions. Its what makes us Aussies what we are. As for" N.M.B.R" it should read "N.M & B.R There is the opposite which reads . M & B.R. You are on the right track with the sense of humour slant. I will let the guessing comp run until noon friday and then post the answer in General info. remind me if i havent. Any posts placed by me between now and friday will be signed off with one or the other intials. I will start a Thread in "general info" similar to the "Which one of these three is Reddo comp that Ditzy started a while back... i think Wil claimed a victory in that one but i havent paid up yet. Dont want to clutter the technuckle section with banter. Reddo - trying to behave on the far side

Van & annexe look great Reddo, good to see you have an original white on black number plate too, they are getting harder to find in NSW.

Hi Gary
Got that covered . two milk crates lashed side by side with cable ties. had to resort to "spring over axle' to get it to sit level behind the landcruiser.
Cheers Reddo

Ray The legs hinge up and are held up by the two tension springs. when hinged down the legs lock in place similar to the side stand on a motor bike. the legs consist of a tube within a tube. You simply pull the inner which has a 3" pad on the end out until it hits the ground. There is a plate with a "u" section halfway down the leg that bites on the inner when the weight comes on them and prevents it from sliding up inside the top section. Sure saves a lot of winding that is involved in setting up later vans which have stabilisers similar to the scissor jacks found in Jappo cars. dunno weather ya can zoom in on the picture for a better look. Lemme know if ya want a close up and i will try and get a few happy snaps to stick on the list. Reddo - Now working on a fold up step that doesn't look out of place . 12 volt elevator ..... hmmmmmm.

Thanks Reddo Did you make these legs yourself or did they come with the van?? A closeup would be good, when you have time. Thanks. Re your step. How about one of those inclinators they use on those hilly waterfronts around Sydney - but with a seat for comfort. You could run it off your 4wd winch!!! Cheers Ray

We have the same sort of legs on our van, so they must have been pretty standard in the fifties.

Only problem i have with the legs is they hinge up if the van rolls backward. If i park it on hard ground i chock the wheels. Not a problem if i leave it on the towball or park on soft ground/ grass.
The van has no brakes so cannot apply overide handbrake.

Reddo I had a spring loaded leg on the front of the Propert. During my trip in March I had to have te mounting plate of the towing hitch replaced and welded. The transferred heat must have weakened the steel of the leg underneath it. That night when I set up camp and jumped into bed (which overhangs the drawbar) the who van collapsed when the leg finally gave way!!! I intend extending the drawbar before I go away again and will then rig up a jockey wheel bracket at the bottom of the V, as the real hassle with the old leg was that there was no height adjustment. I use winding stands on the back of the van, and also have to chock the wheels to stop them from tipping over. Ray

Hey GARY (AKA CARAPARK) , Have a look at the little van in A SAD SAD SAD END , under members photos . If you look real close at the back end you can just make out a leg sticking down . There might be a pair you could salvage . The van looks like my ATLANTIC , which has the same legs as Reddo's van . Only problem , might be in QLD by the look of it . Get Ray a strippen for you ! Regards , MAURIE . "KEEP HOLDEN ON" p.s Dont forget Blacktown swap , first Sunday in July .

Hey Maurie and Gary
This Blacktown Swap is starting to look like it might end up a Mini Coledale. Might ditch the bike trailer and bring the van instead.... Just gotta work out how to stuff a full sized motorbike through an 18" doorway?? Waddyareckon???
Reddo - From just up the road an hour.
