MONA to develop adjacent Treasure Island caravan park at Berriedale,Tasmania
The old Treasure Island Caravan Park at Berriedale in Tasmania's northern suburbs is set to be developed by MONA principal David Walsh.
Mr Walsh plans to develop the site next to his Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) into affordable accommodation for visitors to MONA and others.
The Glenorchy City Council has given preliminary approval for the development which will feature onsite retro caravans, "distinctive and imaginatively themed" accommodation pods, camping and campervan sites, communal cooking, laundry and activity facilities, and administration and service buildings.
MONA already has several high-end accommodation options on the museum site, but in his proposal Mr Walsh said the MOAB (Mona Accommodation Berriedale) would "appeal to a broader segment of the community than those who currently stay at MONA".
The caravan park development is expected to cater to up to 50,000 visitors annually.
The Council's intention to lease the site will now be advertised for public comment and the project will then undergo a formal development approval process.
MONA's business manager Mark Wilsdon said they were keen to hear the what people thought of their ideas for the site.
"We've worked closely with two local companies who are well known for their strong design and sensitive developments - Liminal Studio and Inspiring Place, and we are looking forward to working with Glenorchy City Council on the next stage to finalise our ideas."
Subject to final approval, the project is scheduled for completion by the end of next year.
