This may be a fools errand but I'm trying to figure out how the Carapark serial numbering was organised. The more data I can get the better, I figure… Okay, so an "HJ" in a serial number seems to be fairly straightforwardly "Hunter Junior" — so what's the "C" on a Sixteen-Two? Carapark people: what 'ya got, what's the year, and what's the serial number? Please? (For example, my 1957 Sixteen-Two has "57C49" stamped on the drawbar, and "C49" + "16/2" stamped on the badging under the rear window)

I`d say the C stood for Carapark, the 49 the build number & size is 16/2, so the tag on the back under the window should read (serial C49 model 16/2)

Ha! Yes, I understand what the build number is! But 16-2 is the model designation not the size; just as Hunter Juniors seem to have a "HJ" in that position, not "10-9". It seems unlikely that "C" is "Carapark", given that other classes before and after were assigned less generic initials (Hunter Junior = HJ, Hunter = H, Astronaut = AM… although what's the "M" in Astronaut? is that a size-variant designation? so many questions). I'm asking more out of big-picture interest than re my own van in particular, so varied data would help. Thanks, tho

The Model number is the size on Caraparks

I'd like to see a dataset to establish that. Ideally including a few photos of serial number stamps… But no-one else seems to want to play

Hi JAA,
It's a great suggestion that you've made about compiling the serial numbers for Carapark caravans. As we've discovered with other caravan manufacturers, a serial number list is very helpful in assisting people to date their caravans, as well helping us to understand some of the manufacturing processes adopted by the manufacturer concerned. For example listing the serial number of your van has already told us that Carapark changed from name based model names (such as Hunter) to numerical based model names (such as Sixteen-Two) at least as early as 1957. So I commend you on your initiative.
It sometimes takes a while for an idea like this to take off, so don't despair. Carapark owners will gradually add to it, but as you know there aren't a lot of 'toaster' owners on the forum, so that partly explains why you haven't had many replies as yet. Maybe Stevej can add some information? He has had a long list of toasters.
To help people find this thread, I'd like to suggest that it be moved to the Down History Lane section where the other serial number threads are, and I can then add it to the DHL index. If you are OK with that let me know and I'll do the necessary.
One point about the serial number for your Sixteen-Two, I am thinking that 57C49 probably means that your van was the 49th Carapark built in 1957. What do you think?

Hi again Justanotheramy,
Just another thought on the thread you've started...
People quite often have difficulty knowing where on the A-frame to find the serial number, because the location varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. So it would be good if you could post a photo of your A-frame and serial number as well as a photo of the badge under the rear window, so that people know where to look and what to look for.
As far as I can recall you are the first forum member that has talked about finding a serial number for your Carapark, so it may be that it's not all that easy to find or to see? Or maybe people haven't realised that it's there and haven't looked for it?

Moving it would be great, thanks And I'll post so photos in a bit — although my badge plate at the back has been painted over, so just the texture of the stamped letters and numbers is visible, so it's maybe not the best example! I know stevej has better photos. I've been trying to ask about serial numbers in the Carapark group on Facebook. I know Carapark made quite a lot of vans, but still… some of the numbers seem quite high for a single year's production run. Plus, the year is only included on the drawbar stamp, not on the plate under the rear window. So my working assumption is that my van is possibly the 49th Sixteen-Two from any year (which would make sense if the model name change occurred in 1957).
