Hi,
All Ford 1936( I think) to 39 are the same. Often called the "wide 5" wheels. Ford Pilot had the same wheels. They were all 16" dia, & I think 4"wide The first Mercury I have seen in Australia was a 1939 model, which had different hubcaps from the Ford, but the same wheels I think. We are talking a lot of years ago.
The Mercury of 1939 & 1940 had a larger more rounded body than the Ford of the same year, then the 48 Mercury seemed to be the same body as the Ford, but with different front, trim & mechanicals.
The brakes were mechanically operated in the earlier years, then went to hydraulic in 1939, the first year Ford used hydraulic brakes. In 1940 Ford went back to the normal style of wheels & hubs that have continued since
