We had a great weekend at the beach but there were a couple of leaks in the teeming rain - a steady drip at the back window and another somewhere around the roof hatch.
I suppose this is pretty much inevitable in such an old van, but do people out there have any favourite leak-busting suggestions?

Hi belinda If the leak is in the seams use proper caulking compound dig out all of the other fillers that people have placed there over the years use a flat chisel and a wire brush use thinners to wipe away the silicone residual and use genuine caulking compound which flexes with the van that should be the main problem unless there is a hole or perhaps the door and window flashings are not sealed properly same thing remove the rubbish drill out the pop rivets or take out the screws take of the flashing clean reseal with caulking compound and replace with pops or screws regards Will

We have taken Will's advice about starting from scratch and taking out all the previous caulking.
As the van was out of the shed anyway for Motorfest we rang a glazier and got him to come and re-fit the back windows. It was worth getting a professional. If we'd attempted the job ourselves we'd be up for the cost of replacement glass - the windows didn't want to come out easily. As it was, he was able to get both panes out intact for re-use.
The windows will be re-fitted in a few days using grey silicone. That was the glazier's recommendation because putty doesn't flex when it's dry (and marine ply does). Grey will be a better colour match with the silver paint than white or black silicone would.
In the meantime it's our job to sand and touch up around the window and get the glass squeaky clean.
I'll post some photos when the job's finished and give a leak report following our next outing.

The van has been outside in this week's wet Sydney weather and the back windows haven't leaked a drop. Great!
Now we have to get the roof vent watertight ......
