G'day Mustang,
Looks to be in good nick, eh, but more like 1964 (or later) than 1954!!
Pity the rear view is not straighter on. If it was we could read the brandname for ourselves. It seems unlikely to be Pearls though. Maybe Hughdeani or Kingwood308 will be able to decipher it or recognise the livery?

I've been watching this one… It seems lovely? But even if I could get myself to Balarat from Adelaide, I wouldn't really know how to tell if the seals were still good, or if it was just free of water damage due to its being stashed safe in a shed for decades.
What are members' thoughts about paying for the kind of "pre-purchase" inspection service that gets advertised in lieu of inspecting the van personally?
(Their reserve may be beyond my budget anyway, I don't know, but it is a question I've been wondering about for a while…)

Hi Justanotheramy,
Just so you know, the van is located in Bendigo, not Ballarat.
There are quite a few forum members in Bendigo, so maybe one of them might be willing to inspect the van and give you a report if you would like them to?
The van does look to be in great condition, even for one that has been in a shed for 30 years. I think it must have been a pretty reasonable shed, not just a lean to.
It may well have had a really good spring clean, but I reckon it could be one of those vans that has been in storage and looks as if it's almost just out of the showroom. Check out the condition of the upholstery in the dinette and the laminate in the galley area!

Yes, Bendigo! I did know that, but I always get those 2 muddled when I'm actually saying it… Sorry.
How would I go about finding someone willing to do it? Don't want to break forum etiquette.

Just ask if there's anyone in the Bendigo area that may be able to help.
If you don't get any offers I may be able to suggest someone who doesn't come on to the forum often, but may be willing.

Would I do that here? (Hi, everyone!) Or as a new thread in the "General" section? (so sorry for dragging this OT)
And believe me, I am checking out that upholstery!

Hopefully someone will see this thread! However, start a new thread in the General section headed something like: "Can anyone help check out a van in BENDIGO?" or "Wanted - help to check out a van in BENDIGO" Good luck. Don Ricardo

Contacted the seller, and… the reserve is a bit of a stretch for me? But do-able if it's as good as it looks. Seller says: "van is very excellent condition and the van has all been resealed it only needs a few little things done one light and the gas bottle mount and fit the fridge" He also said that he's had 3 people contact him wanting to view on the first day of the ad being up, so I think I may be outgunned… Still, must try or I'll be kicking myself! Guess I'll be making that request post. Thanks for the advice, Don

Sorry folks, going to put the cat amongst the pigeons here! That van is NOT 1954,it's a mid sixties Nomad, made by Hilandale,no question about it,so please don't be taken in by this one! Cheers hughdeani

Excuse my ignorance, but… is a Hilandale Nomad bad?
I'm okay with it being mid-60s (and yes, pretty clearly 60s not 50s!) and whatever make… if it's not got lurking issues.

Hi Amy, Nothing wrong with a Hilandale at all, just be aware that it's not as old as stated in the add. Cheers hughdeani

Hi Hughdeani, Thanks for the identification once again. Are we talking about the Glen Waverley Nomad as referred to here? Or was Nomad the name of a Hilandale model? I tried to work out the brandname showing above the back window, but couldn't quite read it? Do you recognise it? It certainly doesn't seem to say 'Pearls', so I'm not sure where the seller got that from... Don Ricardo

Seller bought it from a friend's grandfather, so the confusion may somehow originate in that transaction? You know what'd clear this up? If someone went to inspect the van…

Hi Don, Nomad were a hire company out of a service station in Mt Waverley Vic in the 60s. They used Hilandales with Nomad badges on them and some were slightly different to the standard range. There was only about 8 of them and I used to have a look through the windows on my way to school! Cheers hughdeani

I'm looking to… caravan… with it. I was about 4 when my parents acquired an old Carapark Sixteen Two (it was pretty old even then, we're talking early 80s), and it was a huge part of my childhood. It's also a huge van (I hunted down what's left of it and brought it home — that story's on here somewhere). Huge. Heavy. It's a water damaged disaster, now, but when we had it it was lovely; had real character. My own daughter is now 3, and I'm looking for something a bit lighter so I can get started passing on the caravanning bug to the next generation But that old van… The modern ones may be more practical in some ways? But it's just not the same. And to clarify… I've been *interested* in a few vans, but haven't really had the chance to properly pursue any yet — tyranny of distance, and all that. There's a Sportsline coming up for sale soon locally, but… I haven't even seen photos, yet, and it's a week overdue arriving at the seller, so… still looking. This van in Bendigo is beautiful, and the right size for us… but may also have hidden issues or be out of our price range. Hopefully I can find out more about it, and then put in a bid…

Hi Amy, Fantastic news! So glad you are going to buy an old van to enjoy. At present there are heaps of good restored vans, and lots of not so good vans on lots of websites,as you say you just need to find out hoe good they really are in the flesh! If you find any in the Mornington Peninsula area and I' m around I would be glad to check them out for you. Cheers hughdeani

Hi again Justanotheramy and Hughdeani, So, Hughdeani, just to be clear - are we saying that this van is one of the vans that was hired out under the Nomad name by the guy in Mount Waverley? My first thought is that it looks to be in too good a condition to have been a hire van. More like the seller's friend's grandfather used it a few times and then stored it away in his shed. But maybe not - perhaps just a fastidious hirer. And Justanotheramy - you just have to buy this van. We need to have a closer look at the writing above the back window. That's a good enough justification to buy it all on its own...isn't it? Don Ricardo

Certainly good justification for helping me round up someone willing to go and inspect on my behalf… taking lots of photos "for the buyer", of course…

Hi Don, You always put me on the spot don't you! Yes it looks like a Nomad to me,as I said they were slightly different to a standard Hilandale. These hire vans were only for weekends and school holidays back then,so they were well looked after, The fellow that owned them would take them home and clean them to within an inch of their lives and then take them back to the servo. I actually bought the rights to the Nomad name in the 80s to possibly do something with, but it never eventuated so I let it lapse. The vans were only there for a few years too'maybe not enough business or had enough! Cheers hughdeani

Hi Don, You always put me on the spot don't you! Hi Hughdeani, Sorry! I was just wanting to be clear that I had understood what you were saying. Apologies if I ended up getting more out of you than you were wanting to say! Anyway, interesting to know that the Nomad guy was indeed fastidious. That should be an encouragement to Justanotheramy! Alas, no-one seems interested in looking at the van for me — and with 4 days to go on the auction, my concern is that if I leave it much longer the time pressure will make it that much more of an imposition to actually do. It's been suggested that I ask the seller for (a lot) more photos… But I think there's things that can't be properly assessed from photos?
