Yet another Clipper surfaces, they will be more common than Viscounts and Dons soon. I have been comparing this one to the others in the S. A. Clipper thread in DHL and virtually every one is different. I would guess this one as maybe 1958 give or take a year. It has the early front and rear shape but has corner windows in the front. Perhaps a styling update? ?? Mark T's 1958? (not sure if that one might actually be a 1960 or 61, the previous owner Sandy said it was made in about 1958) has the early rear but the front now has the bustle under the single opening front window and larger corner windows which is the same as the 2 1963 vans pictured. The 1961 advert has the same front window arrangement as this one but appears to have the front bustle and a different side stripe. I suspect this van is not a 1961 but is an earlier one and the picture has been used for advertising for a year or two. This might be a 59 or 60. Don R is pretty good and sorting that stuff out, perhaps he could have a look and see if I am on the right track. Chassis numbers would help of course. Where is this one located? Leigh.

The 1961 advert you refer to was actually also published in the 1960 Winser. I think this means that this model with the bustle (as you described it) must have been available in 1960 and most likely in 1959 (allowing for publication timelines, and the fact that I think Winser used to publish his caravan manuals at the end of the year before the date on it). That would make Clipper Special's van possibly 1958 or earlier. But if that's the case that makes the Clipper one of the first manufacturers to use one piece corner windows. I agree also with your suggestion that, by its styling in comparison to the other vans, Mark T's van must be later than 1961 (or perhaps was introduced in the latter part of 1961?). You may be interested to know that photos of the earlier model Clipper Commodore with the wooden framed windows (like Don's on the SA Clipper thread) were still being used for publicity purposes in the 1960 Winser, but not the 1961 Winser. I doubt if that particular model was still available in 1960, but who knows? Don Ricardo

Thanks Richard,
now we actually have a few to compare I will sit down and see if I can sort out an identification guide for the various Clippers for DHL. (Must find the fire photos too!)
