Hello!
I'm hoping someone can help me with a few questions about the painting of my caravan.
I intend to share the whole story here when I'm finished the renovation. Hopefully that will be at the end of this week! The exterior paint job is the final touch.
I've added some pictures to help me explain the context of the question- it's to do with the "flash" and how much I need to remove before I apply the etch primer.
This caravan came with white aluminium cladding. It has (over the past 45 years) taken the toll of our Australian sun, and was coming off with the brush of my fingertips. I decided we'd take off the paint, and reapply to give her a fresh start. The white has come off easily with a wipe of thinners, however the flash was painted on recently by the previous owners and is proving more difficult to remove.
We have used thinners...sanded...more thinners...sanded again. My question is- if it feels as smooth as the rest of the van to touch- is that enough? It's my intention to lightly sand the rest of the van, then use etch primer, then lightly sand again, use primer, and the 2 topcoats will be sprayed on at the end. Do I need to totally remove all traces of the flash for the paint to take?
Second question: There's a light to the left of the door. It's well and truly siliconed on. I was going to remove it and put fresh foam between it and the wall of the caravan. Should I leave it? Or persevere?
Third Question: This one's just an opinion poll. The top of the van wasn't painted in it's original paint job. Nobody but the birds above can see the top. I'm not sure what benefits there are to painting it. Except it would be complete (in my head). WHat would YOU do?
Good job it's a itty bitty van is all I can say!
I haven't been able to find a picture of something quite the same as this van online. There are only 2 beds inside and the table hooks onto the shared bedside table. The kitchen is at the other end. Wardrobe in the middle. No "diner" at all. It's just perfect for my needs though and I'm loving having it in my backyard. Like I said, I'll share the whole story when it's all finished. For now...I've got to get back to my sanding! But I'll check back in for advice regarding the flash.
Many many thanks all you experts out there!
