Hi, I am looking for a early shellite or kerosene cooker preferably complete and in good condition. So if you have one which you don't need laying around the shed please let me know by PM.

Yes thanks, I found a couple on Ebay but I think that I would be best finding one with the fuel tank at the front. The space where the cooker goes has a lid and I think a rear tank would be too high.

G'day Ken, Are you after something like the Coleman in this thread or a more modern version of it and.... do you intend using it ? I see there is one on eBay at the moment...... THEY STILL MAKE THE PLURRY THINGS !! I have read where some people freak-out having gas appliances in their vans ... I have to say I would be somewhat more than nervous lighting one of these Shellite/petrol gadgets inside a van. I did fire up this one of mine (in the middle of the driveway) just to see if it worked and she went OK but... it just sits in Ol '36 for show. Cobber.

Sort of like this Coleman that came with our 1947 homebuilt. Unfortunately not for sale. PM&LM

Yes PM&LM that is sort of thing that I am looking for or something similar from the 30's or 40's. Yours appears in excellent condition. They can be taken out of the van and used on a outside table. And Cobber, I have one of those modern Colemans which runs on unleaded petrol. It has been a bit troublesome and I am really after something more from the period..........a bit of brass or copper polishes up nicely. Koala

Koala , with the Coleman stoves use shel lite only - it burns hotter and cleaner than unleaded , no soot on pots or stoves . Run your one for approx 30 mins on shellite , flush the tank of unleaded - there will be some ' gumminess' ! I,Ve used one for almost 25 yrs and they are a champion stove .

Hi Koala, If it helps, I think what you are looking for is a model 6-J Coleman stove as shown below: Coleman Camp – Stove model 6 – J Directions..... courtesy of Don R. The fuel used is “Shellite” basically …..petrol. You can see a “Material Safety Data Sheet” on it HERE. And the quick reference guide This was the model stove supplied with our Don caravan in 1949. Unfortunately only the instructions above belong to us - the photo was provided by Cobber. Regrettably I op-shopped our stove when we moved house in 1993 - well, who was ever going to need a stove like that again? Twenty plus years later I know the answer to that question - ME! I managed to find a non-operating 6-J on Ebuy a couple of years ago that I use for display purposes. But I would dearly like to find an operating example in good condition (like ours was)...so if you happen to find two during your search... Just one tip, our stove (and the non-operating one I got from Ebuy) is a darker green than the one in Cobber's photo - more British racing green - so I think you might be able to tell the approximate age of a 6-J by the shade of green paint: darker green = older. Ok, so it seems that a Coleman 6 J is what I am looking for. I do have a modern version which looks similar with a different shape to both the unit and fuel tank. Would be nice to have the correct period one though? Koala

Ken Koala, Would I be presumptive if I was to assume you have solved the four question that were troubling you over on that grandads van thread and you want a vintage cooker to put in it ?....................... OK, so I'm a bit slow Cobber.

Cobber Well err ummmmm maybe could be. Yes you could presume that I want a period Shellite Cooker to use in `A' van which appears to have been built in the 30's or 40's. As Colonel Klink says ............... Koala

Maybe could have a new thread in the DHL section so that we don't lose this helpful information on cookers which have been fitted to various vans. It is also another way to narrow down the date of manufacture of a van.

Koala G'day Ken, That could be a "useful" thread .... maybe THIS THREAD that Al started could be expanded to include cookers along the lines you have suggested ? It does already have a couple of advertisements for cookers that show the dates they were available. What do you reckon ? Cobber.

Love it Ken hard to resist a bargain isn't it and I see you've polished up the brass tank Now.. we'll all keep an eye out for the correct right hand model for you How about you put the history lesson and the instructions in the Caravan appliance user manual thread and...... what about that other thread you were going to start on cookers Cobber.

Hi Geoff That right hand one looks to be in the same condition as mine? ? And Cobber, no I had not polished the brass tank. This photo is straight out of the box dusty and all. It does need new leather bits in the pump ast they are dried out. Koala

Great pickup koala! Was wondering do the kero burners burn clean or do they give off fumes and soot the bottom of your kettle? I have two identical Aladdin kero twin burners that have the tank in the middle but haven't fired them up yet? I also picked up an early Maxie two burner metho stove which didn't work when I got it and smelt of kero. I pulled out the old glugged up wicks and replaced them and I must say I am quite impressed with their efficiency ! It works a treat and boils an enamel medium size kettle in about 5 min ! I'm sold! It's going in the Jenno!

I think it is fair to say that if a kerosene stove is burning correctly than it does not leave any soot on your kettle. The thing that you can't seem to get away from is a bit of smell from the kerosene itself not the burner although I think that you can buy odourless kerosene, I assume that you would not have a problem with odour from Shellite. Have searching around on ebay for another stove or the right hand model of the one which I have but have not found a suitable one yet. Funnily enough I was talking to a friend who picked up the RH model of my Companion stove at a market but he wants to keep it. He did not know what he had until I told him. Koala

Thanks for that Koala . I think the Aladdin kero stoves I have are late 30s but not sure?. I'll post some pics in the new " stove section" when I get back from holidays.Yours looks like a rippa being BNIB! A great find ! Have you had it going? I'm sure if you wear your mate down he may relinquish his!! Otherwise amazingly these things seem to turn up in droves once the radars out. Seriously they always turn up in threes so you may even end up with a spare keep looking !
