Colinandsues Don Caravan
Before pickup, this was the condition of the off side of the Don, due to water leaking via the chimney between the ply and a fibro covering that was meant to protect it.
Arriving home
Unloading
The vans bits are all there .... The Don bathtub
Water damaged walls but cupboards OK
The Don bathroom, basin, toothbrush holder, glass
A couple of the lamp shades had to be remade, as did the upholstery as there was none in the van when we bought it.
It's hard to see in photos but the off-side was bowed out about 2 inches.
And much of the frame work on that side had to be replaced
To pull the bowed out wall back into position the lower cupboards were cut away from the wall and the floor, and the wall was pulled in with the strap visible in this photo.
Insulation was installed and plywood was fitted to the rear of the cupboards which were re-installed fixing them to the wall and floor holding the wall in it's correct position.
Insulation applied to the rear also.
The roof was stripped to bare plywood, sealed, under coated then painted with a water based membrane paint.
Ceiling was replaced with plywood and insulated with pink batts. The cupboard doors were painted with oil based enamel and rusty hinges were replaced with identical hinges still available from Mitre 10.
The jockey wheel was replaced and the 'A' frame was extended to allow for easier towing and allow for the fitting of a hand brake ( this can all be easily removed when van is on show.
ALL DONE !
One lead light window was missing and a neighbour replaced it, it looked so good he then offered to do all the windows so they all looked the same age.
(A note/admission by Cobber)
Cobber originally rescued this van but didn't have the enthusiasm ( or skill) to restore it so offered it to another member who didn't have the space so.... we offered it to Colinandsue.
Colin had just retired and needed something to do, we took pity on him, good thing we did aye?
