Hi everyone, A couple of days ago we purchased another vintage van to add to our brood. Totally different to our beautiful Olympic but we are very excited all the same. We were told it was a 1966 model Viscount Ambassador... the number on the drawbar reads E2551. We no sooner got her home and we have already started on our mission to give her a good few days at the van beauty spa. She was covered in thick horrible house paint and the interior covered in undercoat but we saved her just before she was about to be further ruined by someone who was wanting to "DO" her up!!?? We have already unveiled its original aluminium body with a its gorgeous lime green flashing as a bonus..yippee. Would love to hear from anyone who is interested in these models and would love any info on them. I will add some piccies of her progress if I can work out how to haha Love Flowergirlz xo

Hi Flowegirlz, once you get the hang of photobucket, it's like falling off a log. Upload your pics to it, hover over right hand corner of photo, a cog will appear, left click 'get links' , left click 'IMG Codes' (the words img codes, not the code underneath) it will say 'Copied'. Come back here, right click & paste. Doesn't hurt to shrink your photos a bit b4 uploading to PB, makes it all a bit faster. You can have a look at my Viscount resto here; vintagecaravans.proboards.com/thread/11919/v2-viscount-reno-begins?page=1& there is lots of info in the Viscount history thread. vintagecaravans.proboards.com/thread/2038/viscount-caravans-fullarton-cabramatta-dandenongCheers, SGTL

Hi Flowergirlz, Good to see you're putting together an eclectic V V collection there - one bondwood, one aluminium, one fibreglass. All you need to complete the set is a steel clad van! SGTL has already pointed you to a few useful links in relation to your Ambassador. Hopefully you've also found your way to the specific Viscount Ambassador thread in the Down History Lane section? If not, click here. Dating Ambassadors seems to be a case of matching (a) the style of the van and (b) the shape of the side flash, and then (c) comparing the serial number against the serial numbers of other known vans. On the basis of the serial number of your van 1966 sounds right, but the best plan is to post some photos and then ask for comments from Franklin1 who is the serial number/dating guru on the various Viscount variants. SGTL has explained how to post photos using Photobucket, but if you need a more detailed explanation have a look at the 'how to' thread in the 'Forum Guidelines & Helpful Hints' section of the forum. We'll look forward to hearing more about (and seeing) your new van. Don Ricardo

Hi Flowergirlz, I picked up my 1965 Viscount Ambassador (E221) a week ago and am about to embark on her fabulous makeover. I'll be very interested to watch your progress as I'm sure we're going to come across the same issues. My van "Myrtle" is at the repair shop getting a few things done for registration on Monday. Then I'll bring her home and get cracking. Fortunately she's in pretty good nick on the outside so it's mostly a cosmetic makeover with a lovely 60's retro theme to keep her looking her age. I can't wait! Cheers, Lisa

Hello Lazy Glamper, Ohhh how exciting...that will be great to see your progress as well. It has been raining heavily here looks like we have a break in the weather today so am ready to get out there and get some jobs done:) I found a bulk lot of brand new funky material at the op shop the other day for the curtains:) So far mine has just been a matter of undoing what the past owner did...like coating her in an awful house paint which was very aging for her complexion and more shocking...covering the entire interior in undercoat including the vinyl. Also he had put yucky tiles all over the splashback and horrible modern lino tiles on the slideout table on top of the cooker...I managed to get them all off to reveal the gorgeous starburst laminex yippee:) Anyhow I will get some pix uploaded and it will be fun exchanging our progress together:)Look forward to seeing Myrtle! Well Myrtle is officially registered yay. But she's back at the repair shop to have her roof hatch sealed. Hopefully that will be the last of the leaks. I'm bringing her home tomorrow come what may so I can get started. I want to take her away in mid September for my birthday so I've only got a couple of weeks to get her ready. Yikes! I should really start my own thread rather than hijacking yours Flowergirlz lol.

Oh that will be nice hope you get her ready in time for your birthday:) I am at crossroads as to what to do with mine...I have been busy getting all the undercoat off the vinyl and now have to decide what I am doing with the rest...previous owner has coated everything in undercoat. There is laminex and timber under there somewhere but he has just coated everything...going to be a chore to get it all off. I could however remove from doors and laminex and just paint the rest of the timber. But I like to keep everything as original as possible but in this case I may have to bite bullet! Just wondering too is yours a timber or aluminium frame? Oh and I am happy to share my thread with you..haha. Talk soon:)

I can't believe he painted the vinyl! What was he thinking?! lol. the walls of my van were painted too and I assumed it had the faux wood panelling underneath but after scraping the flaking paint off I've discovered it's plain ply so I was happy about that. The cupboard doors are faux wood laminate and I'll keep them like that even thought they're a bit rough around the edges. I agree with you about keeping the van as original as possible but if it had been wood laminate underneath I would have painted over it again and just lived with it. I'm going to replace the laminate on the benchtops and table, and replace the splashback & vinyl which aren't original anyway. As for your van, it would depend on how desperately you want to restore the walls. I would restore the cupboard doors and paint the rest. I'm not a lazy glamper for nothing!
