G'day folks, Well I was inspired by Reddo's 3 hour tour and since the missus was working (which mean't I couldn't go to pickup the Viscount) I decided to take the kids away overnight and give the new Franklin (ex-Firefighter) it's maiden Voyage. As we left at lunchtime for a 1 hour drive, the kids very quickly started whinging for some tucker, so I decided the photographic tour would occur on the way home Sundy. But then (in true Gippsland weather) it rained most Saturday night and most of the way home, so there wasn't much record of the tour. I'm tipping this low budget production (which should be titled Tinnie's brief tour of Gippsland) will definately have a sequel! The destination was camping at a mate's property near Lake Glenmaggie in North-Central Gippsland (I think I just invented a new area!). The Lake is actually a bloo rather big water reservior and like most at present it's only about one third full. So here's the Franklin at the campsite (note the period kero lantern, I also took the superchef Vintage BBQ): and at the same spot 45 years ago, taken with the box brownie a brand new holiday house that was just up the road: (yeh yeh, I know it's not a Vintage Caravan!) On the Journey home, country back road in the latrobe valley, those of you that live on the land, I guess this is beef cattle country (and awfully close to brown coal mine country too, seeing as our local area produces most of Victoria's electricity from it's brown coal fired power stations). This was when the rain finally stopped (briefly). Sorry 'bout the modern towcar, but I am still awaiting some nice person donating a nice early sixties Fairlane to me ;D And so endeth the tour, coz it started to pee down again, and I thought the missus would kick my butt if I drowned the digi camera! Coming soon Tour of Gippsland 2, Bigger, Better & Uncut! Cheers, Tinnie

Good Onya tinnie. Glad to hear you took the kids along. Corrupt thier tender little minds with memories of vintage caravanning at an early age and they will remain scarred ... or should that read scared for life. Sounds like you had a safe trip without loosing any wheels or other bits off the van. We wait with baited breath for the second edition. Isnt it amazing how a couple of picture can make a post so much more interesting than long winded text trying to describe something?? . keep it coming Reddo

Great timing there, Tinnie. You even had the same neighbours as you did 50 years earlier. Does that make it ANOTHER vintage van you spotted? Send some of that rain up this way PLEASE! Ray

Thanks guys. Reddo, well I grew up caravanning, early on in a bondy sided Roma - didn't do me any long term mental harm .............Except for this blasted caravan addiction I have, I have four caravans at home, and 1 on the way next weekend, which will be the start of a very exciting new mini series (actually it will probly run longer than Neighbours), I hope I don't regret it. It will be my most challenging salvage and resto project yet! In all seriousness, my kids totally love caravanning, even have one for a cubby house! Ray, thanks, I didn't do to bad on picking the same site and neighbours 50 yrs on, speacially since I aint exactly 50 yet meself ;D Cheers, 8-)Tinnie

Reddo, I think you have a technical victory mate, on account of pre 1970s content. I have: 1X early 60s Franklin (pride of the fleet!) 1x early/mid 60s Roma (or whatever) currently for sale 1X early 60s Viscount (yet to arrive) 1x 1970ish franklin (egg - still under resto-then to be sold?) 1x early 70s 11ft York (my kids cubby house) 1x 20ft 1970s Franklin (onsite - east gippsland) and, just got rid of the awful (but practical) 1x 70s Cabana: at least the fibreglass content was reduced in it by replacing the roof with colorbond ;D As you can see the carport needs to be about 10 feet longer The York is in the kids 'playground' - the less said about that the better, they got more toyz than me . ;D ;D ;D ;D Hi F/F Thank god there is no law against rescueing/ procuring old unregistered vans and reselling / swapping or giving away same. I would have gone to Gaol a long time ago . Might be a law about selling too many registered vehicles a year and not being a licensed dealer. In fact i am sure there is. i find it interesting to look at some peoples ebay feedback score... some are up in the thousands. i wander if its just old junk from the shed that has got them to that status... i seriuosly doubt it. But i see no difference in dealing in old unregistered cars, vans, trucks , motorbikes and buses than those that have garage sales every second weekend or cart thier stuff to the markets each sunday. The black economy. The biggest difference between them and me is i have no problem admitting openly on the forum that i am a bit of a steptoe. If someone from the forum ends up with one of the vans that tinnie or i have unearthed then the punter and us are all happy. I suspect there is a hellava lot more here doing the same thing . They just dont advertise it. cheers mate Reddo

Stay tuned folks, awl things being equal there will be another van at my place by this time ttommorroww (never can figure how to spell that stupid word). Reddo, In regards to buying and selling the odd caravan or car, etc. I dunno about nsw, but I was recently told that it was 12 vehicles per year in vic before ya need a dealers license (I have yet to confirm this with the proper authority - it seems very high to me). I can honestly say that I have bought every van with the intention of using it for family holidays. Truly, honestly, fair dinkum, no BS, would I lie to you. Not my fault if I keep finding better vans/additional vans. OK, I admit it it is an addiction, I need counselling! No, let me rephrase, I need a bigger shed. ;D Firefighter, let me assure you that, whilst vans sometimes come and go your old Franklin will be staying at the Tinnie household for a very long time mate! And that really is no BS! Tinnie ;D
