Hi Scootman, Budgewoi caravan park is right on the lake and is a 5 min or 10 min walk to the beach across the road and up over the sand dunes ,all depends on your campsite. There is an old bridge that you walk over to an island that you can fish off.My 11 year old nephew come running back to camp yelling I caught a fish and it was a beutie, he had been fishing off the bridge around noon and was using bread because he had ran out of prawns and caught a tasty 34 cm bream that went straight on the bbq.He had such a good week that he wants to buy a caravan when he gets older and go back their.Cheers Dave

Hi C/D back in '75 4 of us went to frazer island in a landy station wagon towing a trailer. First day on the island was .... aaaaahhhh Qld beautiful one day... perfet the next. we put a 12'x12' Birkmire tent up and put double sand pegs about 2ft long on each corner of the tent. The ropes where fitted with 6" poop pipe rubbers to allow fo a bit of give in strong winds. We got up the second day to a hurricane warning. People where baling off the island in thier hundreds. We dug a trench aroun d the tent, got the cards out and few flagons. sat for 2 days in the tent in howling wind and rain. tent stayed up . gear stayed dry and... we got terribly drunk. If we had been in anything other than that tent we would have ben blown away. trees flattened. surf turned into a giant washing machine. lesson learnt dont go to fraser island in the wet season... we where there in mid february.. right in the middle of storm season. I went back about 4 times up until 1988 around July , August, september... Caught truck loads of tailor and had a ball . never rained once. Birkmyre tents with 15oz walls and roof...... almost as tough as bondwood vans.. equally as cool vintage caravans, vintage caravans, vintage caravans Reddo

Hi guys I found some photos of my early camping days in the late 70s.My dad always said rich people own caravans so all we had was a 1960s trailer that my dad got someone to weld a bolt on steel frame and a canvas cover that my mum sewed together. We used to camp at Sofala on the Turon River NSW at the council camp site with no showers and just a council toilet a hole dug in the ground on the side of the hill across the road. We could pay for a shower at the local general store.I used to go gold panning as a kid.0 degrees was common note the frost on the ground I got my licence in that hg 161 3 on tree. 5 star dunnies in the back ground Look i once did have hair. Cheers Dave

Hi Dave Thanks for sharing your memories with us. Isn't it nice to look back. Your Dad was right , "in those days only rich people had caravans", well my dad said the same (so best we don't dissagree with our Dads). Yep Reddo is right "it is fun visiting the past (old fashon holidays)" I don't think most people do it enough these days (Including Me) Yet on a rainy day like to-day I sit here watching DVDs (about the past) on a wide screan TV, and we all keep in touch by way of this forum. A strange mix of the past and present. FC_Driver Bruce

Hi Chippy D. Great stuff mate. Brings back memorys of the old man . me and three mates loaded into a Morris J2 van heading off out west about every third weekend. If it wasnt shooting, it was ferreting, finch trapping, parrot snaring or .... just plain running away from home. disclaimer: all these activitys where legal back in the 60s.. well at least dad said they where and i wasnt gunna argue with a grown up ;D Got a bit congested at night with 5 of us bunking down in the old van. Got a bit smelly after 3 days marching around the hills shootin bunnys and then stewing a few up for tucker in a 10 quart pot. by the time your stomach processed the bunny , onoins, spuds and carrots all that was left was a whole heap of gas that somehow waited until you where horizontal before it made its" escape " so ya can imagine this fermentation process X5 blokes in a box half the size of the ac=verage lawn locker.... Not Good at all It use to be murder coming home over Murrurundi range . back to first gear with a stream of traffic behind us back to Tamworth... 30 miles. Bro in law cured the problem. He slotted a good old 138 holden motor in there and she got up and boogied then. Also got told that the engine conversion was legal as well ... oh how i yearn for those unregulated days. I have a few old black and white prints of the campsites and me n the mates posing with dead ducks, rabbits, roos, foxes and anything else that was fair game for a single shot Lithgow .22. Yup same thing here too mate...Old man use to say... bloody caravans... rich bastar.. s . When we wherent away me and the crew would camp up the scrub near here in caves. Usta cheat and take sausages with us. Sofala... a mate was there the night the publican fired the shotgun in the bar to shift all the bikies out at closing time. The blast hole can still be seen in the ceiling . look up and to the left as you walk in the door. Great stuff Dave. Keep em comin folks. Not ALL our touring heritage is attributable to caravans. There was a lot of good time s had tent camping, sleeping in caves ( first one that calls me a neanthacal (spell) gets punched.... or just plain sleeping under the stars in an army surplus sleeping bag or grey woolen blanket.......... 0 degrees... thats when us teenagers discovered Rum, Port and wait for it... BROWN MUSCAT AS SCOOTMAN SAYS: I AM NOT AN ALCOHOLIC . I AM A DRUNK. ALCOHOLICS HAVE MEETINGS Reddo
