Have had my eye on this one in the front yard of house nearby and noticed the house was up for sale the other day. I knocked on the door and the lovely older couple were delighted to GIVE us this trailer. So we pushed her home and here she is. The old fella made it himself in Millicent in 1955. He used: Vanguard wheels & hubs Side window from a Dodge as the front trailer window. Tillbrook guards (local SA motorbike sidecare manufacturer) Hillman springs - 1934 Triumph Mayflower roof (from a wreckers - cut off with a hack saw!). Note the original SA number plates. The interier floor is wooden. They slept in it when camping. All in all in good condition. We will fix her up a bit and tow behind the VW. Hi Marshy Cool bannanas I love it. Another piece of australias touring heritage. maybe not be a van but was definitley part of the families travelling/ camping holidays back in the 50s, 60s etc. Dont "fix it up" too much. Please dont paint it . Just do an overhaul of the lights , tyres and wheel bearings . Evict any creepy crawlys living in it and use as is. just my 2 bobs worth. Its great. The motorbike mob would kill for those gaurds. Reddo

That's great Marshy, As "The Man" said it is a genuine part of "Australia's Touring Heritage", and a great example of Aussie ingenuity
"The Man" also told me not to paint ol' 36 and I ignored that directive, and he still talks to me, so if I was you I'd ignore him too....ya gotta stop it rusting and make it respectable so the missus will use it. Love the Frangipani, I think you should leave that there too.
Is that PLYWOOD on the sides and up front, or just aluminium ?

Hi Fella's, Actually I am 'the Missus'! Not sure yet about painting it, will think about that. There is something to be said about the 'rat' or 'patina' look. It certainly has got creepy crawleys it. Not sure who Mary Anne is..... but I must say the yard is certainly filling up with various vehicles, mainly vw's... Actually we had to extend the carport to fit them all in.. We have 'shed envy' seeing some of the sheds you blokes have. The Frangipaani was thrown in with the trailer. M

Marshy Great find, got to admire the ingenuity of the builder. But I noticed something a bit strange. The roof is not from what we in the UK know as a Triumph Mayflower: But is from a Triumph Herald, possibly and estate version that has a longer roof: The Herald wasn't launched until 1959, and as it is unlikely the builder would have cut the top off a newish car, the build date is more likely to be mid 60's. Brian from the UK

ukbrian, You are right, come to think of it there is a Herald badge on both sides on the pillar near the roof line. I was just going by what the fella said. You certainly know your cars. The old fella was quite definate that it was from the 50's. Perhaps someone crashed a new Herald in the late 50's which ended up in the wreckers???
