Back in 1993 the car club I was a member
of decided it would be a nice idea if members
could acquire old caravans to compliment our cars.
(You may be forgiven for thinking it was a 48 and FJ Holden car club).
As members got their old vans “shake down”
trips were done to iron out bugs prior to the
big nine day “Caravan Caper” that was planed
to start on the 19th September 1994.
The first photo is of the four vans who made
a trip to Cesnock in the Hunter Valley.
Some wine was consumed.
One van, the one on the left, was considered unsuitable and was replaced by the time of
the “Caper”. (It was big, heavy and unstable)
The next run, and photo, is the line-up at a
Kiama caravan park on the south coast of NSW.
The giant van on the right of the photo was also replaced before the “Caper”<br>
The third photo is of the group on the way
home from a weekend at Wangi Wangi.
One of the members (the bloke with the
monster van) had a launch on Lake Maquarie
and that is how we spent the weekend,
cruising Lake Macquarie.
There were a few more short runs undertaken
before the “Caper” started. By then we
had nine vans plus another one who was
invited to join us from the FE Holden club.
Three members without vans also came and
stayed in on-site cabins each night.
The run took us from Sydney to Sydney
via Wyong-Muswellbrook(1st day). To Mudgee (2nd. day). to Gulgong (3rd day) to Coonabarabran
(4th. day) to Dubbo (5th & 6th days)
to Cowra (7th day) to Goulburn (8th day)
and back to home on the 9th day.
A total distance of 1153 miles.
A few photos follow, I don’t have all that
many,(of caravans), but a compilation of
the videos taken by various members was
produced, which brings back the sights and
sounds of a wonderful experience.
Another 1034 mile tour around the
south coast and into Jindabyne and
Canberra was undertaken a year later.
I hope you enjoy the photos, and the story.
Cobber.
The first photo is some of the mob
lined up in the main street of Dunedoo, they
reserved parking space for us
The kids from the local Dunedoo school
came down to see how it use to be. The star
attraction was Fred's "Propert".
The last photo is most of the group and caravans
in the fore-court of the Holden dealer at Dubbo.
A small booklet was produced for each tour detailing where we would stop for morning tea lunch etc.
On the first tour in 1994 we were supporting Apex International and their Child Protection Trust. Arrangements were made with Apex to pre-publicise our arrival in certain towns and put on a BBQ for local people (for a small donation) to come and look at our FJ/FXs and vintage caravans.
On the second tour to Jindabyne in 1995 another booklet was produced for the 'Great Holiday Caper'
Just a couple of photos of the cars and vans on the 1995 tour.
A rest stop just before Bega.
And another stop somewhere between Eden and Jindabyne.
Very enjoyable tourers they were because we felt like 'trailblazers'... but then the car club decided it was a 'Car Club' not a caravan club
I had to wait untill 2004 for Mark to start the vintagecaravans.proboards.com forum for things to start rolling again
