Hi Dosse
Kilkivan sounds like a lovely bush camping spot but its getting a bit far for us down this end to travel... At least 5 hours plus break for food, fuel & P, means its more like 6 hours each way. Doug, can you come up with any suggestions for a dog friendly camping spot near a dam not far from Brissy? Lake Atkinson? I thought about Fishing Haven at Yamba (its dog friendly) but then its a long way for people who live near Gympie! Maybe 2 locations on that date, tho hate to see the Group divided! Anyone got any more suggestions? smiles

Hi there Dosse, We would be interested in attending this one, having dinner cooked for us on Saturday night is a bonus, you don't get much for $20.00 these days ;D There are also 2 antique shops in Kilkivan along with a second hand trading post. They seem to have a tiny market on Sunday mornings with a hand full of dedicated stall holders. Last time we stopped they had anything from fresh fruit and veg to prawns and bonsai trees. Its held near the old railway building. It has quite some historical interest from the very little a local told me as apparently the station was one of the main points that cattle were driven to in the old days of droving before cattle trucks. They came from way way out west, other places too I guess, before being yarded near the line. There's a little German Coffee Shop in the main street through town too for lovers of Black Forrest Cake and hearty lunchtime meals. There's also the Prophet Gold Mine in the area, never been there myself but I think there's gold panning and etc on certain weekends. Worth looking into for the adventurous fossickers Anyhow just thought I'd add a couple of observations on the area. Hope you get a big roll out for this one Dosse,or at least sufficient interest to make it worth while. There are quite alot of Vintage Vans out here in the bush, or Wide Bay Burnett that might like to think about attending if they're not otherwise occupied. Thanks for posting the suggestion. Hi,
We are in the same boat as Smiles.
Kilkivan is about the same travel time for us as a trip to Newcastle, about 6-7 hours each way.
We cannot afford go to anything that far very often, which is why some of us down around the NSW/Qld border are trying to get more events down here, or at least closer.
But there is nothing wrong with more than one event on the same weekend. As such a large group live north of Brisbane, it makes sense to have a lot of events up there.

Will put it in our diary - have been there before, it's a really nice location, but will have to do our own camp oven, as usual Thanks, Linda and Peter.

Gee Di
If I'd known you were "happy to drive north" I would have suggested we try getting to Bargara again on Australia Day! Third time lucky?

G'day Dosse I'm a probable, just need to do a shift swap and I'll be there. Smiles there are a few spots near Brisbane, Somerset, Wivenhoe, Atkinson, but not sure on dogs / power for them as I haven't stayed there in the van ... I also want to put up Lake Coolmunda at some stage its out near Inglewood buts its a fair way away too. Cheers Doug.

If I was going to Sommerset I would stay at the spot below the dam wall opposite the shop - quieter!

Thanks for all that dam info guys! We're not seriously thinking about going to a dam ourselves on the Aust Day w/end but its all good info for some future events especially during winter with fires & camp ovens etc.
With our luck with weather & camping at that time of year, i definitely think camping below the spillway of Wivenhoe Dam might be tempting fate! lake Coolmunda sounds fantastic for another time tho Doug.
Our plan at the moment is to keep our options open. If it looks like great weather up there in Qland , we may decide to go to Kilkivan. Otherwise we're thinking about taking the opportunity to go south to Corindi, Fishing Haven, Iluka, or Moonee Beach so we can do some swimming, kayaking & fishing. A friend has fixed up an antique fishing rod for Rob so he's pretty keen to try it out. smiles

Hi all, We are now booked in and deposit paid. As for the catered dinner on the saturday night. If that's what everyone decides to do we will go along with the flow. Having said that I think anyone else would be very hard put to do camp ovens as well as we (as a group) can do them. So perhaps we are better off doing our own. I'm certain Paul will be more than happy to help with tending the fire. Regards Di

Hi all
Sure you'll all have a great time at Kilkivan. We'd be there too if it wasn't quite so far.
Lawrence sounded so great from the Bah Humbug Tour that a few of us have decided to free camp there for the weekend. Taking kayaks & vintage Fishing gear. No worries if it rains, we can retreat to the pubs on the river! Can't wait. If there's other folk who want to join us, send me a PM, I always have my trusty phone nearby!
