Hi I am new to this site but have liked the Australian Bondwoods for a while, so much so i decided to attempt to build one. So after a lot of looking at different styles i started my build about 3 weeks ago, i bought an old caravan chassis of around the 1960's era then decided on height, length etc would just like the opinion of the forum on how i am doing s796.photobucket.com/user/harrywhinge/library/?sort=9&page=1

Hi Thewhinge, Welcome to the forum, and well done on your choice of project - building an Australian style bondwood van! Who could question that choice? None of us on this forum. I am looking forward to seeing the photos of your project, but your Photobucket Library is set on 'Private', which I think means that none of us can see the photos. However, given that you already have your photos uploaded to Photobucket, you can also post your photos on this forum by copying and pasting the Photobucket links for the photos into your posts. There are instructions on how to do it in the 'Forum Guidelines & Helpful Hints' section of the forum. The Photobucket links you need to copy and paste are the ones starting with . Hope that helps? It will be interesting to see what style/era you have chosen to base your project on. Don Ricardo

Hi Thewhinge,
Great to see some photos of your van. It's looking tremendous, and has some really nice touches that are evident already.
Have you based your design on any particular Australian caravan brand/model? At this stage it reminds me a bit of a Supalite.
Are you going to have an Australian style roof hatch, or a lantern/clerestory style roof? I presume a roof hatch doesn't normally work as well for ventilation in Britain, perhaps because of hgher rainfall and snow, meaning that you can't afford to have a relatively large hole in the roof when the hatch is open?

G'day there thewhinge, What a gorgeous little bondwood van you're going to end up with!! A winning combination of your craftsmanship and your mates input on finishing touches will come together beautifully . We've been admiring the little finishing touches as you post and now I know why.......... it's the Gypsy in me that wants Lionel to get out the wood working tools and make me one too ;D Seriously, your work is being much admired at this end of the computer. Would love to know more about your mates work, does he base his designs on time honoured vans, traditional decoration? Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing the end result, hope all runs smoothly. cheers, retro64

G'day thewhinge, I like your wood working skills mate & looking forward to seeing the finished article. You're not going to slap paint over those beautiful interior fittings are you stained wood would look good I'm thinking By the way..... I think I smelt a few cross head screws in visible places, bad mistake we always use slot headed screws in our restorations, some blokes even use them in rebuilds of vintage caravans Even though I am a great admirer of the very early English caravans I tend to agree that Aussie vans of the 50s and early 60s were unique, I look forward to seeing how you capture the feel Good luck with it, Cobber.

Coming along well thewinge, I tend to agree with cobber on the interior finish, it would be a shame to cover all that lovely timber with paint, I also wouldn't worry to much about using Phillip head screws , I think some bloke named Phillip may have upset our cobber at some stage thus leaving him with this dibilitating aversion to the screw in question ;D sorry cobber.
