Ask mum to buy you the book "Still Swinging the Billy" for Christmas ;D ;D Edited by Trevor Gill and I think is still available through the Caravan and Camping Industry Assoc, SA. It give a very good history of caravanning, albeit focused on SA. But some pretty good vans came from that neck of the woods.

Unfortunately I wasn't around at that time, but some of the people on this forum may have been . However have you had a look at the Family Holidays of Yester Year section of this forum, it has some great pickies from that era which would help to get a feel for the way it was back then. Have a special read of the story The things that happened back then.... The main thing that come to mind when I imagine what it must have been like was the things were much more simple. There was not the fancy stuff in most of these vans. Family's were bigger and everyone just crowded in and enjoyed their time together. A lot of people didn't have a lot of money back in the early 50s as they were still recovering from the war and the depression. So caravaning provided a reasonably priced holiday especially for the larger families without the discomfort of a tent (which usually was floorless in those days). That's why I believe home built vans were very popular from 45 to the late 50s. Maybe some more mature members could give some more insight and interesting info on the culture of vanning in these time.
