Well done schultzy x 2. And its got PORTHOLES. Did you know some people will pay outrageous $ to get hold of portholes. With the size of your ranchero ute you will probably be able to fit the van in the tray. That way you dont have to bother with rego! ;D The handles on the front and back look interesting - the last time I saw something similar was in my grandma's toilet where they were installed to help her off the seat!! Where abouts did you source the van from? I reckon its amazing how these vans keep appearing! earlee

The first time we took the trardrop out was to a fly in at Watts Bridge, one of our other vintage plane members said he has a van like ours but a little bigggggger in his sheed. (Lets face it, just about anything would be bigger). We said sold.
I have heard that some people will do just about anything to get portholes, so I guess Matt and I have been very lucky ;D ;D ;D Two vans booth with portholles thats 4 portholles all up, not to bad.

Hi Guys. Congratulation on your new adoption YaY!!!! Another cheer for the portholes ;D ;D ;D You guys will have the last laugh about the pull handles when you get old and arthritic - at least you will be able to move your van around without cutting off the circulation to your fingers which you get with those thin handles!!! That front window looks almost like a box window! Susann you will be able to take your potplants with you on your travels!! Going by what you guys did with the Teardrop, I'm sure you are going to have a very flash van there when you have tidied her up. You should put the Teardrop into the ute tray, not the van, in case you have a fight during your trips away. That makes more sense to me!! Cheers Ray

Hi there Shultzys Is your van aluminium over ply or aluminium straight on the frame??. I have just demolished an old alloy van ( yes it had a porthole)that had ply under the alloy. badly rotted. The unusual thing i found was that the ply had been painted with pink primer then covered with canvas before the ali cladding was applied. I have seen canvas over ply on roofs of vans before but not over the entire van. Anyway Suzanne make sure Matt changes polishing arms every hour otherwise he is gunna end up with one arm bigger than the other... sorta like a big mudcrab. Reddo

hey shultzy(s) the van looks great with a gleaming polish - an aussie equivalent of the US airstreams. ;D ;D Maybe I should put some alloy on my van so that I can get the same look as yours! hey reddo. just for interest, my old lantern van was covered in canvas/calico ALL over it except for the window frames. Even the entry door was covered. did you say porthole?? rather then having it clutter up your place - why dont you send it to me - I have just the spot for it! earlee.

That lantern roof van I didn't buy in Melbourne last year was fully clothed all over. That was one of the reasons I didn't buy it - some of the cloth had delaminated and water had got underneath and rotted the ply/?frame even?? Seemed to be a popular way of getting that smoother finish than ply I would guess. Very high maintenance though cos you gotta make sure it is properly sealed. You're working pretty hard there Matty. Are you going to be able to get any of the dints out of it at all, or will you leave as is? Cheers Ray

Gday E.J. Ray I think that we will leave the dints in the van,the only economic way of removing them would be to reskin with new alloy I would prefer to stay with the original skinning as i dont really want to see the condition of the van underneath :owhich may very well be good hoping to get the van registered in the next couple of weeks so that it is ready for the festival of flight fly-in at the end of august at watts bridge airfield in the picturesque brisbane valley ;D ;D catch you later matt

Hi Schultys
Tell Matt he's doin great Suzann. Might be worth fitting lower profile tyres . If the van barely fits through the door at the moment then new low profile tyres should solve the problem. Other alternative is to have a spare pare of rims with no tyres on. just bolt them on when you are storing the van in the shed or moving it inb or out to work on it.
Iwish that air show was closer to home. Would dearly love to spend a few days snorting avgas. As i said to you at Esk my brother is keen on old plans. I will forward him the lik you provided in your other post. I hope you get the van finished and the weekend is a huge success. cheers Reddo... from the far cooler state.

now that we have had the new van at Wintersun I can post some new photos. We had been keeping the reno under wraps for Wintersun 2007. The roof paint was very cracked, so off it all had to come. We like the new paint, but we are a bit concerned that we may not be able to find it in a van park. The gas bottle in not what it looks like. ;D ;D The curtain's are lost of Campbell's Soup tin's made to look like the USA flag. We think is a Andy Warhol print. We think they look good. Hi Karen and Glen Matt and I were sad to see the van go , but we are very happy that she has gone to such a nice couple ;D ;D ;D . We know that the van will be used so much more now that she is with you two then with us. Suzann and Matt PS:- We didn't have the van up for sale but Karen got in touch with us asking if we were thinking of selling her. We relay had no use for her. This just goes to show "If you never ask...You will never know'

You will have to paint the A model Red Kaz! Or Maybe Glen can paint the little Mack that colour, or is this going to be towed with the new Plymouth sedan?

;D Thanks jbj Iam sure you wont be able to miss us this year at Valla and at Yamba just look for the bright red roof lol Dave I'm sure all of the rods will eventually have a turn at the towing. but he wants to do the plymouth like an old police car like mike done with his taxi. and that probably will end up being the main tow car for the van but untill then the A model will tow her just fine. as it does have matching back tailight.

Do the Plymouth like an old police car hey? I gather a US one, black with white doors rather than the light blue we would have had here! The Mack would look good red! That van looks like one of the Keith Winser designs (10'?) that were very popular in the 50's. Many were made slightly unique by the owner/builder. There is a very similar home built one here in Castlemaine, (portholes and all!) will try to take some photos and put them up!
