G'Day VDN Isn't it amazing how a few colours , flashes/stripes and some signwriting can make an old van come to life . The proverbial " icing on the cake" so to speak. I can appreciate what you and your dad have been through with this resto and your updates with pictures have given us all an insight into what is involved and what it takes to bring and old neglected van back to its former glory... or in my opinion " better than its former glory". Coledale is gunna be sooooooooo cool this year. Reddenviuos

Thanks Trodler and Kaybee! I have road tested it a couple of times now. Tows beautifully but the VW's 1200 is a little underpowered so I'll be fitting a 1600 very shortly. The weatherproofing around the door is going to be a bit of a bugbear I think but, I like the idea you have with the trough across the top of the opening Col and will be doing the same. The VW Beetle engine lid opening has the exact same set up and keeps the water out. I will do a water leak test tomorrow with the garden hose and see what happens or how much water gets in I have fitted a rubber seal around the hatches perimeter but, we'll see. Cheers Greg

Love thjis resto/rebuild. I built my own in total ignorance but have learned so much from what you blokes a doing. A real neat job. In my case I looked on American sites, got plans and built my own from scratch after knocking down and old wrecked Millard and cutting the frame back. The tips on painting I could have used as I used two part epoxy resin over the ply to seal it and the primer, undercoat and two coats paint. Your td looks much neater veedubnut and lighter than mine. Well done - a good job.

Hello Warb and Royce, It was a full rebuild from the chassis up. It is very lightweight and easily towed by a small car. My VW still has the original 1200 and tows it fine. I decided not to go ahead with the 1600 swap as I like to keep the old girl original. Only thing is the space inside is very cosy I will be looking for a full size van in the future but, I'll probably still keep the T.D. as it is ideal for touring with the Beetle for a night or two. Cheers Greg

G'Day VeeDubNut, I"ve just signed up today and come across your Teardrop resto. I have what I believe is a 1948 "Safetee" Sportsman Caravanette that looks identical to yours. These units were built in Melbourne ( Mentone) which is where I sourced mine from. I have owned it for around 8-9 years and used it a few times. Towed it from Melb. to Cairns at that time with a view to pairing it with my '39 Buick. Built a tow bar for the Buick and toed it to display days etc. but no camping in recent times. Retired now and back on the list of things to do. Love your finished product.

G'day Graeme, Welcome to the forum We have a section called "Down HISTORY Lane" (that seems to have bad connotations for some folk ) but it has a section on "Sportsman Caravans" that you might find interesting, you can find it if you click HERE. This van of Greg's looks good aye? Cobber.
