Ok folks, Here is a few more progress photos of my Teardrop Trailer... I have been doing a little work on it each day after morning shift this past week. Well I now finally have a week off work and its going to be a marathon to get the sleeping quarters cabinets completed and the front and rear doors finished and fitted. I decided against using aluminium "j" moulding and have used timber moulding (the original was timber anyway) I think it had alot to do with me being too damn lazy to get in the car and drive 45mins + to get the aluminium I have scored a great set of period correct tailights (thanks Trodler) and also a vintage 1928 Chev stoplamp/licence plate light... Should look great when its all fitted. I will keep the pics coming. Cheers Greg I fitted a new period style towel rail to the front... Not only for practical use but, it just finishes the front nicely

Hello fellow vintage vanners, A couple more progress pictures... Only one more coat of gloss enamel to finish and some pinstriping then I can finally start assembly ;D I'll be glad to have it completed and be able to have a good rest from my garage.

Greg,
What type of paint are you using - I presume it is a spray job? - looks excellent.
How many coats are you applying?
Great job

Hello Peter,
Paint is "Bristol" enamel... There is 4 coats of oil based undercoat with a very light sand with wet and dry between coats...
There will only be two coats of top coat enamel. I will give the current coat another wet and dry in the next few days after it has hardened up a bit. Then the final coat will be very smooth.
Luckily my father is a signwriter/painter by trade and he is very good with a paint brush! No spray job... We considered this but, there would be overspray everywhere. Enamel is very messy to spray.
Cheers
Greg

Thanks for that Greg,
Is the trick that you rub down between coats and apply sufficient coats to bring out a smooth finish?
What size and type of brush do you use?
I don't have an issue applying the undercoats, but that final coat may be a different story.
Does anyone know of signwriters in Brisbane?
Peter

No probs Peter,
The trick is to smooth it out between coats yes. This allows the paint to fill any woodgrain and minor imperfections as you go.
My father thinned the paint about about 1 part mineral turps to 3 parts paint this gives a pretty good consistency.
The brush is just a natural bristle one about 3 - 4 inches wide. About $30 to $40
I don't think you'll have too much trouble applying the top coats. The worst case scenario is you'll have to rub it back if there is a problem.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Greg

Hello folks, Thought I better add a few more progress pics of my TD. I have to have it completed before August 1st for its maiden voyage up "The Pathetic Hwy" to Nambucca Heads Only have wiring and tailights to complete fitting, window frames, a little more painting and a new tow hitch/drawbar to be fitted. The hatch cover is my second and successful accomplishment First one was a disaster but, after some trial fitting all is looking good now. Cheers Greg

Cheers. Trodler.

Hi Greg Great stuff mate. The teardrop has come a long way since it was stored under canvas in a paddock. She looks great mate. Your persistance and patients has paid off. Did you have any hassles regestering it with a single light at the back???
My bro in law is heading to Valla for the great kombi muster on the 4th August. I take it that is where your headin for. There is also a 2 day vw swap on at the same place....... But being a Veedub nut i suppose you already knew that>
Once again ongratulations on a great effort.
As Cobber would say.... rescued and restored!!!

Hello folks, Thanks for the comments of praise and encouragement fellow vintage vanners It is very close to being completed now... If only the weather would clear and I could have just a couple of warm days to help with the paint drying. It's been freezing and damp here Maurie, Yeah originally the TD is from Yamba so not too far away from Nambucca Heads. I'm towing it with my dak dak. I hope to have it road ready by late this week so I can do a trial road trip up a few long steep grades in the mountains here. I need to be sure the 1200 is going to cope otherwise I have a recond 1600 sitting here if I need it ;D My father has the old Belmont in pieces at the moment repairing rust and few other things (how convenient) ;D Reddo, I had no probs with the rego as fortunately it has never been out of rego. I have got indicators and tailamps to fit to the sides of the body... Just waiting for paint to dry on the housings Yes Valla Park is where we're headed for the VW Spectacular... Should cause a bit of a stir I think with the TD. I'lll more then likely bump into your brother in-law whilst there. Cheers Greg

Greg, Can you give me a bit of info on the timber “J” mould you have fitted to that great looking re-build job you have done on what was a sad looking TD when you got hold of it. The closest to what I need, that I have found, is Porta mouldings “external corners”, which only comes in Tasmanian oak, and won’t take kindly to the curve I have to have on “old ‘36”. What have you used...where did you get it, and did you have trouble bending it Thanks Greg, Cobber.

Hello Cobber,
Thanks mate. It certainly does look great and has possibly never looked better.
I have used maple half round on the edges. I could'nt get the original style which looked like a timber style "J" mould. None of the hardware stores in the Blue Mountains or Bunnings have it. The half round maple bends really easily and is available from any hardware/timber supplier. I glued it all on with "Aquadhere" urethane waterproof glue and also nailed it on with an air nail gun.
The end result does look really good and is as close to original as I could get it.
Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg/Cobber I was thinking of using half round moulding but all it will do is cover the nails that you have hammered in to hold the roof sheet on. It wont cover the seam that you see when you look at the van side on Why couldnt we use maple moulding say 15mm thick X 25mm wide .give it to a cabinet maker or furniture manufacturing shop and have a rebate cut across a bit over half its width and thickness with a router so that you end up with a "L" section mould that will sit down over the side a bit and cover the roof to wall seam . The roofing sheets i have used are 4.5mm. add to that a thin layer of "No nails" so all up about 5mm thick. if the rebate was 8mm deep by a max of 20mm wide then the L sect would cover all evils. I was looking at the joins on my TD again last . they are not that bad. If you punch the nail heads in a touch and fill with either wood putty or "soft Bog" used by panel beaters then give it a good sand and lavish it with plenty of paint , then you would probably get away with no moulds at all. just sand a slight half round on the edge before painting it all. Bugger use pair... Now look what you've done.....you's have made me think again and the headaches are back Reddo

Reddo & Greg, The problem I have with “old ‘36” is that it’s condition is so good that I only have to replace the front sheet of ply, and I have been able to loosen & save the timber “J” mould in that area...which means the rest of it is still intact, except for about 60cm each side, where it does it’s steepest curve under the van, I am determined to replace that section with mould as close to the original as possible. Greg mate...buddy...What did you do with the best bits of the “J” mould you took of your TD...it could be worth a fortune to somebody who really needs it Cobber.

G'day Cobber You might be lucky mate I just got back from Nambucca Heads this afternoon and some of the old pieces are still in my trailer awaiting a trip to Katoomba tip. I'll have to check that out I doubt I'll have any "J" moulds though as it just disintegrated when removing it. I hope you can find something suitable mate Greg

G'day mrfj55, I did'nt want to go there Bigdidda and I decided to chicken out at the last moment... I was still rushing around like the preverbial chook at the last minute. The weather forecast was'nt looking good and I was not confident with the weatherproofing at that point. So a last minute call to the Holiday Park and we were able to get a 2 br holiday unit (last one remaining). Well it poured all day Saturday on the VW Street parade in Nambucca Heads but, a huge turn up of cars. Rest of our stay the weather was superb. I have more time now to have it ready for Coledale... Don't worry I won't chicken out ;D Cheers Greg P.S. Loads of photos will post a few soon. Anyone heading to Nambucca Heads should definately stay at the White Albatross. Beautiful place!
