JBJ .....I've had similar problems with both "Joker 2" and the old masonite caravan I'm currently restoring.
I've had the door jam shut on both of them due to expanding timber.
Joker 2 was left out in the whether during winter for 3 weeks last year, the timber expanded and I had heaps of problems with the door. I never repaired it, and after a few weeks back under cover, it rectified itself.
The old masonite van was also left out in the whether for a few weeks, and the same thing happened.
The old wooden vans are best kept under cover when & where possible.

Hi Mark,
I have nowhere to keep my vans & Dodge except in the open. As it rains a LOT here I have to live with the problems that causes.
I just got the door trimmed a bit, & got a new centre section of the door made from 20mm form ply, so that should handle the weather a bit better I hope.
Hopefully byu end of next week the van will be finished outside, with portholes & all.
I'll post some pix soon.

Hi All, A couple of more pix of progress on my van. I finally got my timber portholes off the wood turner. I’m using the same section on the inside to finish the installation. We got some green patterned glass cut & fixed to porthole with silicon. I’ve primed the frames & sprayed the outside ones in pressure pak chrome. I like the finished product, & as its almost impossible to beg, steal or borrow aluminium ones, these ones will do me. The other pix is the Purdon sticker Wayne Magrin sent me that he had made. It looks great, even allowing that I got it a bit off centre. Thanks heaps Wayne, another example of Forum members helping one another. Jailbarjuice

Hi Peter,
I'm happy with it now. I just got the 240 volt wiring finished. we put an external outlet in the annex side, with a switch inside, & fitted an external light. Next job inside is to repaint cupboard doors yellow ( from mid blue) & to try to match the original off white from the walls & roof, to fix a few sad spots. A new matress for the rear is coming up up as the original one isn't fresh enough for Sue.( I thought it was me stinking up the van, but she reckons its the old mattress. I hope it is, & I dont waste the money & still have same smell problems.)

Your efforts are inspirational Dennis.......now if only someone would go to work for me, the time I need would suddenly be available!!

Hi All Ive just finished the outside work on our Purdon ply van. We had the striping & sign done by Rick Pacey, a name most hot rodders will remember from days past. He painted the vans name, after Sues favorite song by The Young Rascals. Then striped the front The porthole The side trim & the back panel. Now we’re happy with the overall appearance. img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/jailbarjuiceIMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/jailbarjuice/march06025.jpg[/IMG] We’ve only got the interior painting to finish, & its off to Morgan in 3 weeks. We’ve just found a reasonably priced storage shed for the van, so after Morgan its full on back on the Sunliner & Rebuild our Dodge. Jailbarjuice

Hi All,
Thanks for the comments. It just shows that you can do something creative with an old van without destroying its character.
What about someone doing something with that van for $1500 that Al just recently posted? Mine wasn't that much better when I got it. I dont want to do another ply van, As outdoor storage is all I have unless I pay to store . Anyway I've got the Sunliner to finish, & I just found another Sunliner close by I've got to look at & try to buy soon.
Theres always something out there capable of being rebuilt in the style you wish.

HI JBJ
Ya better issue the "Groovin Snail" with a crash helmet , goggles and a seat belt . i dont think he will be use to the speeds he is gunna get up to across the Hay plains behind the Juicemobile. He might end up peeling off the side of the van like one of those space shuttle tiles on re-entry to earths atmosphere.
Looks great mate.

Hi JBJ
Your van looks great JBJ ,carn't wait to see interior shots when finished. It gives us lot in the process of rebuilding that added incentive to head for the shed and get stuck into it (theres just not enough hours in the day.)

Hi Kingy,
I dont know where you'll find the lights. Mine were complete on the van, but the lenses were faded to almost clear. I got new lenses cast by Dale McShane at Classic Plastic on the Gold Coast, but he only does the plastic bits.
If I were you I'd look around at swap meets for something similar, cause you can get any lens cast by Dale, even if its broken.
I'm going to use '59 Hillman lights on my Sunbliner, mounted horizontally. I've lights from all sorts of old cars on the vans, & with a bit of thought in the mounting, most can look right.

TAIL LIGHTS CAN & DO LEAK
I was working away with a cabinetmaker the other day inside the van, fitting a few drawers & shelves to improve storage space for our trip to Morgan, when we lifted the vinyl flooring to check something . We found water was, & had been for a long time, running down under the vinyl & had delaminated the ply floor. The floor had always been bouncy, & had considerable flex in it from the day we got it. I thought it may have been because I'm nice & light, but I instantly realised the floor was stuffed. When we looked hard, we realised ( yes it was raining as often happens up here, & the van was out in the open) that the water was running down the wiring from the rear lights at both sides & middle. When I removed the lights I found water in the holes that let the wires thru, so I siliconed everything up & stopped the leaks. We then put a new 1/2" marine floor over the top of existing floor, & screwed it down to the chassis, & it stopped all of the movement. We managed to save the vinyl, & now the interiors been repainted, the vinyl cushions redone, & just a final re assemble & clean then we're ready to pack.

Hi D+S Juice " Groovin' " has come up great mate. Pin striping and scrolls certainly set things off. Linework was common on just about everything back in the fifties, sixties. I use to sit for hours and watch dad lining old trucks, buses , trotting gigs, even mine and the mates push bikes. I wander whether any of the old bike shops would have any old stock water slide transfer scrolls still kickin around. ?? Most of the Speedwells and Malvern stars had a few long scrolls on the down tube, the cross bar and the headstock. This leads to another question .... did they make a speedwell or Malvern star caravan Looks like Rick hasnt lost his touch either . I remember his graphics and artwork from back in the late seventies. He has aged a bit since then but so have we all...... those of us that have sampled the "Juice" will probably last longer than the rest of em. I have never tasted embarming fluid but i reckon that stuff that you use to steam up would have to go close to preserving our gizzards. Anyway mate. Not too many more sleeps before Morgan. Please to see ya got stuck into the van and finished all the bits you said you wanted to do before easter. Installing a mattress will probably be the easiest job of all. The Landcrabber gets new rear brake shoes . wheel cyclinders and a drum skim tomorrow. Thought i better do something about the brakes before the trip. I even managed to get over to one of them thar flash car wireless shops and got em to install one of them fancy sqwauk boxes in the dash so now i can go deaf listening to Joels C.Ds on the long stretches. They had to replace it after 10 minutes...... .... i cut the front out with a hacksaw tryin' to make one of my old 45 rpm records fit in there.... Learn' sumfin' every day eh Thank christ i didnt try to stuff a Slim Dusty 78 rpm vinyl in there. ;D Reddoldbastard

Hi All, Finally got the interior finished, & ready to roll to Morgan. This shot is basically how we found it, with the original 1958 fit out. We installed a new ½” marine ply floor over the delaminated existing floor, & fixed the leaks in the taillight area. ( we hope). The existing vinyl was re useable after some repair work. A fridge was fitted, & the cupboard door used as front for a new drawer. A vent was installed for the fridge. A drawer was fitted under the bed, & a new mattress installed. The existing front cushions had a terrible odour, so we had our friend the upholsterer make new cushions. We also fitted several shelves, & repainted the entire interior in enamal. All the hinges & bits were polished & refitted. Wiring was completely redone, & a circuit breaker fitted. The paints not the greatest in spots, but looks OK from a couple of feet away. Now all to do is the quick fit shade cover I’ve got partly done. I’ve mounted a spare up under the back, on a wind down Toyota truck bracket, & I cant think of much more I need to do except use it a lot. Jailbarjuice

Crikeys JBJ You and The missus have been busy. Looks great mate. I salvaged a wind down mechanism for the spare off a toyota hilux . Been too slack to fit it. At the moment the spare lives on the floor under the bed. Was considering mounting it vertically on the draw bar about 50mm off the front of the van. Would have to be a solid mount to support a 16" wheel. The bonus would be all the weight is in front of the axle and the wheel and tyre would stay nice and clean. Been lookin at your photos and Just thinking how you, me and a few others have mastered photobucket. 12 months ago we would have put together a 10,000 word composition to describe what we have acchieved. either that or send the pictures to ditzy for processing. Probably owe Jim a word of thanks here eh. Anyway mate. Looks like the splinters are ready to roll. As Humps says you will have to focus your resto energy on the sunliner after you and sue have caught your breath. Morgan... how many sleeps now mum... are we there yet dad??? Reddo
