Hi, Newbie here on these boards as just today I acquired this van. Unfortunately I have no idea what make, model or year it is. There are no badges or markings that assist me and the previous owner had no knowledge about its history. Hoping someone on these boards might point me in the right direction? Thanks

Hi newbie, interesting looking van you have there! Looks like a Franklin door,Franklin thermo panel aluminium,a Rice coupling and push out windows. A real Heinz variety! But the shape of it looks like a KeithWinser "Trailalong10" which was a build your own van from the 50s and 60s,so could have originally been Bondwood and recovered with aly at a later stage. Can you find a rego sticker anywhere with a name on it? Would love to see some interior photos too. Cheers Hughdeany

Thanks hughdeani,
Build your own caravan, that sounds interesting. will do a bit of research.
The van was used as storage so the inside is full of boxes and books. It will be cleaned out in the coming weeks so I will get a better look inside and also around it. Hopefully that will also give me a good idea as to if it is worth 'bringing' it back to life!
Will check out for rego info.
stay tuned!!

We picked up the Van on the weekend and I think hughdeani might be right. To our amazement we were able to tow it from its position (after inflating the tyres). Looking underneath the van it does seem to be plywood with aluminium covering. There are no markings or rego details however it has got a Halstrom fridge, mirra sink and a tudor stove. It sleeps two with a single bed/couch at each end. There appears to be water damage to part of the roof, but otherwise seems ok. The windows all need replacing as they no longer seal shut. I have no experience with vans, what's the best way to determine if this little van might be worth the effort to restore? I have requested a copy of Keith Winser book so i can check if any similar vans are in there. Sorry, I don't know how to make images smaller!

Hi all I'm new to this forum and obviously have not a clue about vintage vans, but I am hoping to learn.
I've recently acquired a van which and may consider fixing her up as its cute as a button, but I have no idea where to start.
The van has no markings so I am unsure of its make or age. From another post on this forum it has been suggested it might be a Keith Winser home build job 'trail along 10'. I've got the Keith Winser caravans book on request at the library so I can check out the plans and see if any match up.
The van is 10ft, plywood covered in Aluminum. It appears to have some water damage to the roof but not quite sure.
I've been reading that its easiest to work from the outside in, so thinking I should pull of the Aly and check the timber. Hubby is thinking we pull from the inside to see where the water leaks are. Any advice on how to start tackling this project would be awesome. I'm not even sure this project is worth undertaking, but if I can work out how extensive a project it is, then at least I'll have more of a clue.
Any help would be most welcome. thanks. Kerri

Hi Kerri & welcome, the best way for us to give our 10 cents worth is to post some pics. Either via photobucket or imageshack.
Depending on how far any water damage has got, it is usually easier to take off the outer skin & replace the framework & of course make it watertight as you replace the outside so it doesn't happen again!
Cheers, SGTL

Hi kerrib and welcome to the family. I have just recently finished a resto on my 59 Homebuilt van Fisher's Resto. In my resto I started by removing the cupboard doors, and the laminate that had been placed on them first, as I too didn't know where to start. I then started sanding everything. When the weather fined up and I was sick of sanding for a bit I started pulling the front of the van off which didn't take too much as it nearly dropped off. Then I started looking at the front corner slowly pulling back the outside ply and basically worked around the van in a clockwise direction, while leaving the ply hanging by a couple of nails. I agree that removing the outside cladding is far easier than the inside. The more you dig the more you WILL find and soon the list of things to do will become overwhelming ;D. But try to organise the jobs to be done into some logical order and keep persevering and eventually it's done. Looking forward to seeing some pickes and following the progress.

Sorry, I don't know how to make images smaller! hi kerri the sizes you have posted or ok, keep them coming - the more we see, the easier it is to identify. as an aside, it's also a good idea to keep all your questions and van information in the one thread.
it makes it easier for you to find and easier for the members to help you.
do you want your new thread merged in to this original thread?conti

Thanks Conti and all for your patience whilst I get the hang of this forum! I'm so relieved to hear some of your advice already, we are keen to get started but as I mentioned, not even sure where to begin. Given your advice so far we might peel her aly off on the weekend as the front section seems to have a bit of water damage. Have added a few more photos as suggested. I'm hoping she'll be worth the trouble to pull back together! and yes Conti, if putting it all under the one thread is the way to go, then merge away. I'll be good from now on, I promise! hi kerri - all your posts are now under this thread - conti

G'day Kerri, Now..... I'm not saying it is because I can't find a model on the SA Clipper thread in DHL that looks exacterly like your van but.... your van has the characteristic "step back" where the floor meets the front and back walls, and the SA Clipers were the only vans that had that design feature ( as far as I know) I don't have a photo of the Tralalong 10 hughdeani mentioned and I do agree the interior of your van does have an home made look about it but just look at the Clipper thread and see if you can find any similarities ......... I can't but that step back ( or what ever it's called ) has me intrigued. Cobber
