Wanting to purchase a 1950s Globetrotter. Think I have fallen for it! Have seen one I would love to restore over a long period but feel a bit daunted...never owned a caravan let alone restored one. So any info would be much appreciated. From the photos the chassis looks rusty (know nothing about chassis so please keep technical lingo to a minimum) and body needs some work as there is a little rotted wood on the exterior and some from dampness on the interior. I don't know if it has brakes and even if I need to acquire some or what kind? Have contacted owner to see how much it weighs and if I can tow it with my current car (Toyota Corolla Ascent) but no response yet as he has gone on holidays for a bit. Sorry for so many questions!! But pls be gentle....new member!

Hi Missy Welcome to here, and welcome to the Globe Trotter club! I'm not much help, technically, but I think my own experience with our newly restored Globe Trotter might yield a little useful fruit. First and foremost, towing. We tow ours with a 6 cylinder Ford wagon, designed for towing (semi-auto, torque etc), and while I'm sure a smaller car could tug it, we havent tried. Our van weighs about 650/700 unladen, so techically a sewing machine could pull it Regarding restoration, ours had rotted ply and window frames, but floor, ceiling, draw bar and chassis were very sound. It was our first full restoration, so we were mindful of our limitations - both fiscal and skill wise. Certainly didnt want to be doing major (and potentially very expensive) things like replacing chassis, axle, draw bars, brakes etc. Hard enough just doing all the carpentry! Will send you a pm (private message) to discuss further. Interested to know more about the van you're wanting to buy! Cheers Izzy

Hi missyleah, Melbournes Cheapest caravans in Seaford Vic have a late 50,s early 60,s Globetrotter in their yard, been there a while, non original paint, dark blue with white stripe. Haven,t had a good look at it but appears to be ok,from a distance anyway, maybe minimal restoration? Cheers Dave.
