G'Day Frog, and welcome to the board.
Here's my thoughts on valuing vans. If I look at something and think I can't buy a rough one and restore it to that standard for that money, it's good value. Buy it. Or, I can build a better one for the same or less money. Bad value. Don't buy it. It's all relative.
Many people here will have varying ideas, most of them good, but all different. Lots of good advice and knowledge around too.
Enjoy!
Dave.

Hi Frog.
I'm not new to the caravanning world but am new to the vintage van world.
Here's my thoughts,
I agree with Dave. I'm an ex mechanic so mechanical things are usually no problem for me but put me next to a couple of bits of wood and some measurements and its all mumbo jumbo for me!
I ain't no carpenter thats for sure!
So restoring a van for me means a clean up, a coat of paint and a pretty up and thats about it for me at least at the moment.
The vintage van I bought last week suits me fine as it only needs some of the above TLC and the price was right for me.
Based on my ability I wouldn't have bought a van that needed major body/interior work as I simply don't have enough faith in my ability to be able to restore it.
If you feel you have the ability to do a full resto on a basket case van then have a go but I would pay according to its condition.Better vans would usually be priced accordingly up to ones that are in touring ready condition. There are still some good buys out there and there are still some undiscovered, good condition vintage vans around as I found out a few weeks ago.You just seem to have to be in the right place at the right time it would appear.
I never thought I'd find a vintage van in the style, size, condition that I was after but eventually I did and am very happy with it.
Like reddo said to me a week ago, once you get one vint van its addictive ( probably up to when you run out of shed space!)
Like Dave, I work on the "how much time/ money to restore" thought as opposed to the "restored and use it now" way of thinking and decide from there.
Do a bit of looking on old posts on this forum and it could help you to work out what other members buy/restore/sell .This is what I did and it helped me.
I've found everyone on this forum to be VERY friendly and I get a good laugh at some of the comments here and there (reddo springs to mind).
I/we are now hooked on vintage vanning and don't want to be cured.
Terry and Grumblebum.
