I have a drop axle which we are trying to fit a breaking system to. The problem seems to be that the size one of the baring seem to be no longer available so it's starting to look like maybe a new drop axle. I was just wondering what you guys (and gals) have done to get around 1. fitting breaks to an existing drop axle, 2. obtaining baring that everyone said 'are no longer available'? 3. Have you attached new stumps to the old axle?

Hi,
I woud suggest that buying a new axle, fitted with electric or over ride cable operated mechanical brakes, & using either Ford or Holden bolt pattern, would be the safest & simplest way to go.
Its not worth playing around with bearings that are a difficult to find size. Good old Murphy's Law dictates that will be the bearing that fails at South West Woop Woop.
Go with simplicity.
You might find someone has one that will fit for sale, but I think you will be better served by buying a custom made assembly.
Be prepared for difficulties maybe happening with your springs, as often the old springs dont fit & work on the new axle.
But when you get it finally sorted, you will have decent braking & riding. Thats very important.
Another point, several years back I replaced the bearings on my early Sunliner. I found the inner bearing very hard to replace, but eventually found a set. So I put the bearings I replaced in a bag, covered them with grease, & put a small tin of grease with them, then stored them in the van in case I ever needed another set. Didnt take up much space in a cupboard, & cost near nothing other than the new bearings, But I cant remember if I told the person I sold the Sunliner to, where & what the bag was in one of the cupboards.
