G'Day All, just finding my feet here on your wonderful forum ... hard to know where to start reading!! Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Phil from the Whitsundays (yes, I do scare people by playing the ukulele ... hence the user name) and it is a pleasure to have found you all. Just bought a Franklin Mini 10'6" 1966 model. I assume it is that as I read some of the info on here from the Franklin expert, Franklin1, thank you for your in depth knowledge. The chassis number is 395-6 so I assume it is an early example of the model. She (Rita) needs a fair bit of love and attention but nothing too serious (he says hopefully) but I'll leave that for the correct place in the forum. I managed to tow her from Brissy to the Whitsundays, about 1200kms, on her little 10" wheels, through the worst storm they had in years ... lightning, thunder, hailstones, torrential rain, and the goat track they dare to call the Bruce Highway, without any bits falling off, and only a drop or two of water inside, so she can't be that bad!! Looks like she is totally original inside, with the exception of the stove being removed, so I am looking forward to bringing her back to her glory days again. As soon as I get some good photos and learn how to put them up, I will. Thank you again for this great meeting place and the wealth of knowledge held by the members.

Welcome newbie! My first foray into VV restoration was well before this site was even dreamed of, and it was a Franklin Mini. Its first outing was from Brissy to Cairns, then onwards from Atherton to Hughenden via the developmental road to Winton and back to Bris. Never missed a beat apart from a van full of red dust from the developmental road That's what happens when to don't seal the lower bottom rear panel properly ;D ;D They are a tough little van and I still recommend them. I had the 10 inch wheels on mine too, when I bought it, but changed the axle and hubs and put on 12 inch wheels. That was the maximum it would take for comfortable clearance and the whole rig looked much nicer. Enjoy your van Ray

Thanks so much for the welcome! Yep, they seem like a great little van. Replace the 10" with 12"? Sounds like a really good idea, they just feel a little small and it makes clearance to the road a bit tight at times. Thanks for the hint. Looking forward to this restoration. Please feel free to quote me on this in about 6 months into the job!!

Hi ukulele1, What a perilous and dangerous journey! Wild weather, lightning and hail no less, navigating the ;D ;D ;D goat track and all on 10" wheels. What masterfull and skillfull driving to tow your little "Rita" through all those perils safely home to the land of islands. Congures up images of Indiana Jones crossed with Elvis in Hawaii, We brought a van home(towing) along the same Bruce Highway, through one of the worst electrical storms we've even seen, and at night . Quite hair raising. Seriously though, welcome to the forum. Glad you made it home safely. Maybe we will see you and your Uke at an event sometime. We look forward the restoration process, hope it all goes well. cheers retro64
