I found the high density too hard. In the end I bought a good second hand foam mattress and cut it (with an electric bread knife) to the size I wanted and then covered it with the material I wanted. Worked a treat for me.

mattress foam is to soft to sit on.and seat foam is to hard to sleep on so what you can do is use a sheet of each. eg (2"soft and 2"hard and glue them to each other )

Hi Rod, Just about to complete my mattresses/seats. It helps to have a father in law who is an upholsterer... However, as you have mentioned the issue is one of support. Early vans, and some top line late vans all use inner sprung mattresses as their bases for seats and beds. All my seats are in fact ma tress bases(65 Olympic). We painstakingly stripped and repaired each one and replaced with all new materials(or close as). While this is a BIG job, in the end there is no comparison between inner sprung and foam rubber regardless of how many soft/hard or in between foams you glue together. So, if you can resurrect your old ones, or find others go for it. You will not be disappointed. At the very least make the phone calls and see if anyone makes them for your vans dimensions. Even an entry level innerspring is going to be far better than any foam combo on the market. Heck, get a cheaper from Ikea an tweak it a little. You still need to cover it and half the work is done!! Plus you will get a better nights sleep! That's my 2 bobs worth. Sorry for all you foamiest out there. But if you are looking at an original look you will never find it in foam. I will post some pics soon. Hope all that blah blah was somewhat helpful Cheers Bruce

Hi Rod, why not give "Made to Measure" a call, I'm sure they could help you.

While companies like M to M can supply custom inner spring mattresses to your required dimensions, outer fabric choices are somewhat lacking.
I would be interested to know what others have done in terms of making their own covers for a more period style look.
