Ok ,
You have heard about how i found the Kennedy with the Reddotel MK11 vintage van finda elsewhere here on the forum. ;D ( whatever.. the Bugga really works ;D)
Well.. i guess its time to "fess up"and give a real account of how i came to own this van
lets go back in time .. back to around late 2007 .. just after the Pasha bulka bulk carrier had ran aground on Nobbys beach and my ( Lulu's) red morris minor floated out of our yard in the floods.
It was about that era that i was out on my 1971 Norton Commando . Just happened to be heading along Macquarie st, Wallsend when i happened upon a bloke cleaning his Kennedy van.
I pulled up and asked about the van .. its history.. and it likelyhood of becoming available for sale.
The Owner.. David was more than happy to let me look in and around the van.
But alas it was not for sale as he used it quite often as his accommodation.....
He had an interesting career as a minister for a denomination that escapes my mind at the moment. Basically he would travel to different areas and take over the role as minister for the local church while the regular minister took a break...
(I will check with david to se if i have this right.. we touched on it the other day but i was too focussed on the van to get the story right in my mind.)
We spent some time chatting and i bid him farewell....
that was 5 years ago....
Thursday this week.. 30/5/2012 i had a day off work to sort out the transfer of rego on the FB van i was selling this weekend.
On the way to the rego office i detoured up passed "Dreamcatchers"house to show Trish the bondwood that the "dreamcatchers" are offering for sale ( see elsewhere here on the forum).
On the way back down through the side streets i had a flash back to Davids Kennedy van......... Thinks............................Hmmmmmmmmmmm.. i wander???
So.. i pulled up out the front and marched up the drive..
Knocked on the door and Davids wife Margeret came to the door.
David was home and we struck up a conversation
David has been unwell . problem with his legs for a few years now.. semi retired and doing work as a Police Chaplin..
A very difficult/emotional job i would imagine.
I noticed the van up the yard and it appeared that it had not moved in some time.
We went through the van and i learnt that the van use to suffer from leaking wrap around windows.
Turns out David was also a fibreglass boat builder a while back. so .. to cure the leaking windows he simply removed them and glassed over the openings .. moved the centre windows out .
Done finished. there has been lots of little mods done to the van over the years.
It was originally sold in Melbourne ...by Korong caravans . then it moved to Alice Springs.. it was badly smashed in the rear end and David repaired it before it went to Uladulla... then on to wallsend in 2007.
Currently registered as a 1975 Korong caravan.. so i guess that makes it a non vintage caravan.. ..
It has travelled across the nullabor many times spending a lot of time in W.A and then on .. around Australia 3 times.
Towed with a subaru liberty.. nissan pathfinder.( wrote off by road train in W.A van not attached at the time) ... Holden caprice.
After an extensive run down on its history i made David and Margeret and offer. They stated that thie son had an interest in the van and would need to consult with him before considering my offer.
Later that same evening i recieved a call saying that i could buy the van
Accelerate through to today .. saturday 2/6/2012.
Having just waved hooray to the bloke who bought my FB panelvan i jumped in the FJ ute and headed off to Wallsend to pay for/collect the van..
The rest of the story is best explained in photos..
I will launch this text and come back with some retriveal photos.
