Hi All,
If you happen to prefer tubes in tyres on your van, like I do, a tip to save problems with tyres going flat.
Over the years I've run a fair range of tyres & rims in various styles & sizes, on my various cars.
I used to have problems because the steel wheels were widened with welded inserts, & I found tubes stopped the (tubeless) tyres from deflating. I guess I just stuck with a preference to use tubes.
I found years back, using tubes occassionly resulted in them going flat because the small " tags" inside the tyres were not removed, & wore a pinhole into the wall of the tube.
I had forgotten how much fun this caused me over the years, until I towed Deejay to Cowra. I had 2 tubes went flat, both from the "tags" in the new tyres that had been fitted rubbing holes in the tubes that had been used.
During the last repair, the tyre technician said that it was a common problem, & stated that his company always buffed the tags from inside the tyre before they would instal tubes. Makes sense to me. But the guys that did the first repair didnt do that at all, so I guess I potentially have future deflation problems.
I bought a spare tube just to be safe, in case the tube failure is out in the bush where you cant buy 15" radial tubes (or light truck tyres).
I dont know if I feel like pulling all the wheels off & apart to check the potential problem at this stage, but I think I will before any more long trips.
Also both my "punctures" were on the left rear on the tandem, & the guys at both tyre services told me that is the wheel that suffers most failures.
I also lost one of my hubcaps from this wheel.
Anyone heard this before.
