ummm not sure if this is helpful - i am also new to this. we just went through the same thing and we couldn't find any chassis number. we were told by transport SA to make up our own number with a mix of alpha numeric characters of 6 - 8 digits. ideally they want it to be on a metal plate affixed to caravan or engraved straight onto the caravan. we used this for our permit to tow (which in SA is $22). we had to have her home by midnight on the date of travel or she turned into a pumpkin. or something.
when we went to register her the made up chassis number was no issue but the fact that we had a hard time identifying her means we now need to get an identity inspection to be able to register *sigh*

Thanks KylieGirl,VICROADS gave me a permit,i told them it had no chassis nmbr $20.80.Anyway it's home now and i found it.On the top of the drawbar l/h/s theres welded nmbrs but very small, but there's a ''hitch''they read 917- ,yeah!Where the year is some clown has welded a ''level -ride'' bracket over the top. Going through some previous threads i've noticed that mine is identical to ''Nitesurfers''the only diff, mine being silver ally. So i takeit mines a FranklinFreeway 14' , 66model, ;D

Hi finkvanfc Congratulations on acquiring a "Franklin" ,when you can we all would like to see some photos of your van both inside and out. Seeing that some previous idiot welded over your year number(probably didn't know what it represented anyway). I wonder have you checked the back of your gas stove as usually there is a manufacturers plate and they quite often have a manufacture date on them,(this is of cause if its the original stove). I was lucky with my "Franklin Freeway" as i found the exact date of manufacture written on the back of the interior lining when I removed part of aluminum cladding. up until that time we where not sure what my chassis no 1515-7 really represented. To learn more about chassis numbers go to the post "Chassis register" " Live the Dream" Regards Foxy

Congratulations on your acquisition.... 66 was a bloody good year. Looking forward to the pics coming soon. Mine I think was silver ali to begin with but someone painted it.. Im not sure if it was a factory job but someone has enhanced it with crappy top coat... Plans are to strip the paint back to bare ali or at least a good primer coat.... I like the silver aluminum look but the misses likes the concept of the white so we are still yet to argue that one out..... Have fun and hope to see some pics soon
