Well trendsetters, Australia's first ever book on Vintage Caravans is proposed for real soon......that's right folks , you heard it first right here, on the V C.com website forum !! It'll be in the form of a 52 page, A5 size book . Never before has a book been dedicated in Australia on this great subject. Regardless of the credit crunch, the global economic meltdown, and the total destruction of capitalism as we know it, we at vintagecaravans.com are soldiering on, and are about to offer you this magic, highly collectable book full of unreal colour pics .... and text . Imagine what it'll be worth on Ebay in the year 2109, probably double its original value ;D. Its not going to be overly expensive, but it will be VERY limited, so when expressions of interest for the purchase are encouraged, don't dillydally . Sale of the the booklet will be offered somewhere else other than the forum, and despite Kevin Rudds recession we have to have, sales are expected to boom . Production of the book is costing management alot of money, that much in fact, that you'll notice a few familiar caravans and cars for sale to finance the project ;D ;D, but what a worthwhile project it'll be, and your support will be appreciated . And ......., you're just going to love the name of the new book ........ shhhhhh, just keep all this quiet .......don't let the opposition know what we're up to ......OK

I don't think I'll order ten this time but, I could be tempted to take one. Is it to be a coffee table type picture book....... yes? Could it be a forerunner to a serious 'History of Caravanning in Australia'.... that would be good ;D Cobber.

Hi Mark Sounds like a nice idea So.. is it a book with reference material about each type of van manufacturer, the production run from the foundation of the company to closure, models offered by the individual company . sorta a desk top A5 book .. Or is it going to be a just a "Booklet" as you have also called it with pictures of the different brands?? Sort of like a "padded out " calender . Have you considered copywright on using photos of members vans and sought permission to use them in print??. Not that its likely that anyone would take you to task over that sort of thing but it can happen. Different to us all throwing photos of our vans up here on the forum for the viewing pleasure of others. No financial gain involved. I cant pledge that i will buy one until you can give me a rough idea of the format, how many pages and a ball park figure on cost and postage. Dont mean to sound negative and i have always rallied to your causes.. just need to get a handle on whats on offer. Whatever the answers ... i wish you well with this initiative. Reddo Reddo

Hi All,
I thought it might be helpful if I gave some details on this book, since Mama Razzi and I will be doing the work of producing it for vintagecaravans.com if the project goes ahead.
What we have in mind is not a lavish (and very expensive) coffee table book or a comprehensive reference manual. We were thinking of a modest sized booklet - 52 pages of A5 (about 21cm x 15cm) format. About half the pages would be colour pictures of vintage vans and the text would be about a selection of specific VVs that we have photographed - rather like miniature magazine articles. There would also be some brief history on a few brands. If all goes well, we could put out volume 2, 3 ... in future.
To answer a few of the questions that have been raised:
(1) I understand that the photographer owns the copyright on photographs. And the booklet would be sold through the forum, not in bookshops. When Mama Razzi and I photograph VVs, we don't think it's friendly to insist that owners sign a legal photo release form. But we can do that in future if need be.
(2) Yes, there has to be a small profit in producing the booklets. There are real costs (printing, CD postage, etc) and real risks - we had 50 of the 2008 calendar left over, so the printer made money but we didn't. But we don't make the calendars and books for profit. We do it for fun and to be good members of the VV community. If it was just for the money, we simply wouldn't do it.
(3) We also do everything possible to minimise printing costs. Some printers quote prices around $30-40 per copy to print a booklet like this - or insist that you have to print 3000 of them. We search around to find those rare printers that will do small print runs at a reasonable price, while giving acceptable quality.
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Papa & Mama Razzi

Thanks for the clarification Papparazzi. I will call this post an "expression of interest" . I will not pledge that i will buy one until we have an exact price on the booklet and postage costs. I dont wanna stuff anyone about by building up the number of pledges and finding later on that not all are willing to pay. As you say.. it has happened in the past , and it would be a shame to see anyone out of pocket due to over enthusiasm at time of ordering. I know its sounds like i am being a miser and that is out of character for me. Just adopting a wait and see attitude. Is there a reason we cant market these to the public in the Newsagents ?Limited market within the V.V community..... Reddo

I'm with reddo on this one. Very interested, depending on cost/product. Has any thought been given to improving the quality of this production by selling some advertising space in it??? I take it that it be similar to the regional real estate booklets that agents have as freebies at their door entrances?

Hi Reddo: Yes, it sounds like a good idea. But marketing the book/calendar through newsagents would raise about a million new questions, like ISBN/bar coding, shrink wrapping, display stands, distribution networks, returned stock, etc. And would increase the investment to many tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce all the stock. It doesn't sound like fun to me.
Hi Ray: I have made queries about getting advertising/sponsorship for the calendar. But no-one is interested in paying for advertising in an item that sells less than 200 copies. Maybe when the vintage van community has grown enough to buy thousands of copies it could be a different story.
We're just doing this for fun, let's make it too complicated.
Papa

Ok then keith .. I understand what your saying. Heres another half baked suggestion dfrom the shed of invention... To make it a bit more interesting or "period .. what about using some 50s and 60s van accessory adverts out of the old keith winser books in amongst the pictures to add to the books character.. Bung one in every third or fourth page. Even 12 adverts would pad the book out by six pages and would add very little to the cost of the book. maybe go 1/2 page adverts and only take up 3 pages... see i listened when they where doing "guzinters" in maths. 2 guzinta 12 .. 6 times 3 guzinta 6 .. 2 times Yours truely.. The ever helpfull.. me ;D
