G'day all, Noticed that some photos are still being posted in a large format which take forever to open/download. Just a reminder (especially to newer members) about a free photo resizing package which Geoff & Jude alerted us to some time ago (and which is locked in under "Forum Guidelines and Helpful Hints") www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/download-image-resizer.phpVSO Image Resizer is free to download and certainly makes opening photos extremely quick....especially for those who have 56k download speed or wireless internet connections. As someone who uses wireless Broadband, I rarely look at any post that has photos that take forever to open (and I'm guessing I'm not the only one). If you want to get your photos viewed, take advantage of this free internet tool and simply click on the link above. Daggsey

G'day Daggsey, My understanding is that you can resize photos directly through Photobucket. When you log into Photobucket, and click on the green [ Upload now] button, you get the green [ Select photos and videos] button showing. Below that button there is a blue Customize your upload options link... Click on that link and you'll get a pop-up box on the screen showing all the photo sizes available for resizing... Once you click [ Save], the pop-up box will disappear and you'll be returned to the [ Select photos and videos] button, which you then click to select your photos. For this forum, I think 640 x 480 is a good size... My understanding of the Photobucket Help system is that once you customize the size, every large photo uploaded after that will automatically be resized to that chosen size. The originals on your computer will stay whatever larger size they are. The only photos that won't be resized to 640 x 480 are photos that are already smaller than that on your computer (eg. ebay photos are often 400 x 300 ). If you change the customized size at any time, all photos uploaded after that change will be resized to the new size. All photos already in your albums will stay at the previous size. The easiest way is to "set and forget" your customized upload size to 640 x 480. Don't fiddle with anything after that, unless you're savvy about Photobucket. The downside of doing it through Photobucket is that you've actually uploaded the large photo in the first place so Photobucket can resize it. That chews up your internet allowance unnecessarily, but if you're not really cluey about resizing programs, then the method described above is "fairly simple" (if there is such a thing as "simple" when it comes to Photobucket ). cheers, Al.

G'day all,
Daggsey has explained why it is important to avoid uploading photos to the forum which are too big in terms of file size. The size here refers to the number of megabytes (MB), not the size of the photo in square centimetres.
Just to explain a bit further, depending on your camera and its settings, when you download your photos to your computer they may range in size anything from say 400 kilobytes (ie 0.4 MB) up to 5, 6 or 7 MB or more. If you then upload say a 5 or 7 MB photo to Photobucket and then to the forum, it will take quite a while for anyone with dial-up internet access to see the photo because it takes so long for their computer to receive the photo. In addition, if someone only has a relatively small monthly download allowance with their internet plan, then they will be dark on you because their allowance will be very soon used up at 5 MB per photo.
However, photos don't have to be very big files to display well on the forum. For example the photo of the little caravan in Franklin1's post above is only 30.62 kilobytes (that's only 0.0362 MB), and photos anywhere from that to 100 or 200 kilobytes display perfectly satisfactorily.
If you want to check how big your photos are before you upload them to Photobucket and the forum, just place your mouse cursor over your photo and click the right hand mouse button. One of the options which appears (at least on a PC) is 'View Image Info'. Press that option and a little box will appear. Somwhere in the box will be a line which tells you the file size either in kilobytes (kB's) or megabytes (MB's).
Of course if you fix the setting in your Photobucket account as Franklin1 has shown you then everything will be sweet, and nobody will miss out on any pics because they take so long to appear.

I resize by using the "send to" function on the photos. I have my photos in folders according to what event they were taken at, as I suppose most would, and within that folder I create a new folder I name "resize". I open the folder containing the photos I want to post, highlight all the photos I want to upload by holding down the control button and right clicking each photo. Then release the control button and moving the cursor over any of the highlighted photos right click again, the drop down menu appears, then select "send to". The system then asks you what size, I use 800 X 600, and then it opens up the MS email with the photos already attached and resized. Then highlight all the photos and right click, select "save as", go back to your resize folder in your photos, right click in there and select "paste". Then upload the phots from there. The advantage I find in using this set up is that I am not uploading large files to photobucket, and the photos are also still on my computer in the resized format that is needed for other forums that don't use photbucket. It is also very easy to do multiple photos. They turn out like this, this one is 3.5kB: There is always more than one way to skin a cat as they say, what some find easy others don't. Cheers, Doug.

Hi All,
Just had a look at my Photobucket. I had my pix set at 800x600, so I adjusted it to 640x480.
I guess the purpose of posting pix is for others to see them, & I vaguely remember how bad dial up internet used to be here on the Forum.
Only took about 30 seconds to make the changes, so good on you Daggsey & Franklin! for letting us know how to make it easier for others.

Hi Shane, you can still easily resize them, the link actually pulls the pic from photobucket. Just open you album, click on the pick and wait for it to come up, when it's up just hover over the pic and you will see a series of tabs appear one os resize just click on it and choose the size and its saves the pic to the new size, you will need to do this for all pics you'v posted but it doesn't take long, i did all mine this avo. Hope this helps Don

G'day Shaneandsimeon,
Your pics are fine, they are all well under 100 kB's (ie less than 0.1 megabytes). They shouldn't cause anyone any problems.
To check the size of your photos, hover your mouse over the photo, click on the right mouse button, choose 'View Image Info' and a box will show up which will indicate the size of your photo in kilobytes or megabytes.
