G'day All, I need a second opinion on some research. Would somebody who is a wizz at Google Street View give me their opinion, please? This photo was posted some time back by ex-forum-member 313royal, and is a photo of the Globe factory in SA... The Globe factory is listed in records as 43 Port Road, Bowden, SA. I believe the suburb is now commonly referred to as Hindmarsh. If you are good at navigating your way around Google Street View, would you tell me if you think this photo was taken in First Street around the back of 43 Port Rd? Google won't let you go down First St, but looking at the buildings in the area, it looks like the only place it could have been taken. I'm trying to update the Globe Trotter DHL thread, and I want to attach some info to that photo. Thanks for any help. (...and yes, I need to get a life ...) cheers, Al.

Hi Al,
As a Globe Trotter owner, I'm happy to respond! I "googled" both 43 Port Rd and also 43 First Street .... and I was able to get into and view both streets.
I could "go down" First St and with some factories still there, would think your photo was taken in First St.
By way of interest, is "Globe Trotter" spelt like this or like this, "Globetrotter"?? .... as I've seen it spelt both ways.
Hope this helps
Max

Thanks Max, have responded to your PM. You must pay more for your internet connection than I do Google wouldn't let me go down First Street, so obviously I'm only on a "Budget Plan" Yeah, the debate about Globe Trotter versus Globetrotter...bit like a story I heard recently about Road Cruiser versus Roadcruiser The company was registered as Globe Caravans Ltd, so I'm of the opinion that the very first caravans they made were called Globe caravans. I'm not 100% sure that EVERY Globe caravan was given the Trotter bit as well from Day1. It may have been the case, but I'm not yet convinced of it. In February 1959, Globe announced they were going to enter the Sydney market and were looking for interested distributors (Agents). Their advertisement separated the Globe and Trotter words from each other... The words are separated on the boomerang logo, and on the painted kangaroo above the side window that we've seen. So to be historically correct, I believe the name should be shown as Globe Trotter. But that's just my opinion... cheers, Al.

With winterwood's help, and using a more co-operative computer, the location of the Globe Trotter factory sign seems to be here... If anyone over that way is going for a Sunday drive in the Hindmarsh/Bowden area, perhaps you could turn off Port Rd into Gibson St and then first right into the little First Street laneway, and confirm if it's the right place. Seems to line up with No.10 First Street. Take your Globe Trotter with you and have your own historical photo to display in your van. (See if there are any shops selling "new lives" in the area and buy me one. ) thanks, Al.

Hi Al,
There is a photo of the Globe Trotter factory sign in the current (May 2009) issue of Caravan World magazine. When Mama Razzi and I were in Adelaide, Raym took us for a sort of Magical History Tour around the old caravan manufacturing sites of Adelaide.
We included a brief outline of the tour in the introduction piece for the current Wooden Vintage Caravan feature in Caravan World - which includes an article on Raym's Broadway.

The buiding with the saw toothed roof in your pic was a metal foundry when I worked across the railway line in 88. I walked past it many times. so I must stop putting off investigating it and get down there soon.

Ok . Today I went to the hallowed ground of Globeys and I can confirm that the above photos and arrows indeed take you to THAT place altough you need to be careful as the sign on the gate reads "gates may be closed without warning. Now that gate has a mate at the other end of first street, so you could get locked in!! I drove in and turned around in a carpark with a sign reading surveillance cameras in constant use so now i'm a star of someones cctv. Probably Raptis as this carpark is between Raptis fish factory and Adanced Ropes and Nets who apparently now occupy the site of the foundry I mentioned earlier. You can walk thriugh this carpark turn left and the sign is on your left and fading. The railway line is between the G.T. sign and my old workplace of '88 and clearly visible to me if I was interested at the time. My van would look good behind the 57 Chev I owned at the time as a family car, or the 66 V.C. Safari I sold only months before buying the globey. cheers Beetles
