Did you buy that van with a roadworthy certificate??? If you did, then the issuer should be reported and have his licence withdrawn If you are replacing the drawbar, I suggest you make sure that the drawbar supports the whole length of the chassis and not just the front cross member, because stress will find the weakest link pretty quickly!

I have never seen an L shaped slide-out type of setup. Mainly, because I think the design aspect is too difficult. Normally, the sink/stove section is on runners that slide under the bed, as you point out. But the cupboard section against the wall is another point. Firstly, there is the whole caravan framing on that side which would need to be reinforced. Secondly, there is the issue of getting around/over or through (?) the wheel hub, springs and axle - a engineering feat for you to perform!

An interesting way to re-design a caravan OP. Glad you're using a van in need of reno, rather than cutting up a perfectly good one. I am rather curious about the L shaped pull-out kitchen. Where will it slide into when not in use, without intruding on the interior space? Have you managed to work that out?

Don Ricardo, I'm pretty sure that it's the one SGTL described. The openfronted building was pretty dilapidated and let weather in. People have tried to rescue some of those vans ever since this site began. Good to see that they are now being passed on to people such as SGTL to bring them back to their former glory!

Started to pick at the sides of the "Shanghai Hilton' yesterday.
I didn't think you'd be so literal SGTL You really DID get the PICK into that wall, going by the "little" bit taken out!!!

Gee SGTL, this thread slipped under my radar Is that the Wedderburn bloke who's letting the TD's and Properts deteriorate in the weather? If so, how didja do it??? Give him a heart attack and then resuscitate him?? My eyes glaze over a bit when I see words like Viscount etal, because there are just so many of them! But this looks like a Rare one, congrats on the find and then being able to get it. Good luck Ray

He used left over paint after painting his business premises. Can anyone guess the franchise?? Keep at it HALPS

Hi Lexy
Stay on this forum, but file the thread in the Members Photo Album section. When DonRicardo reads this, he might be nice and move this over to that section for you and save you having to start a new thread.

Hughdeani probably won't answer your question Lexy, but we all have been amazed by his depth of filing cabinets on all things caravanning!!! He is the "Stig" of all things caravans!!! I think that he also worked in the industry at some point!

Hi Mustang As DonR pointed out, there are many factors involved when adding weight to a drawbar. Yours is new and engineered to the specification to carry the extra 40kg. Adding the same weight to a small van without drawbar reinforcement would, to my mind be folly. Better to err on the side of safety!

Hmmm It has the door on the wrong side!! Is the first interior pic a built-in radio? Could it be American/European or copy of one? Whatever its origins, it deserves to be restored.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds very much like a case of "novices go where angels fear to tread!"The fourth vintage caravan I had (which was supposed to have been restored correctly by the previous owner), ended up having rot through it and I felt like putting a match to it. Had to walk away from it for about 9 months!
It sounds like you've taken on a major task. Before you set to it, ask yourself if it is really worth doing this if you are a first time restorer. It is not an easy job and will cost you MUCH more than you budget for. C Caravan shells can be taken from their chassis, but someone like hughdeani (he used to build them) will tell you how easy it is - NOT!
Sight unseen, no-one here can tell you if the van is restoreable. Perhaps if you could put up some pics, especially of the damaged areas, it might help.

Wot, the neighbours still haven't tossed you out for all that dust you're creating? Keep at it while you can. I expect to see the finished work next April!
