Brilliant porthole fitments Reddo. The vented front window looked good. Maybe a piece of black one way security mesh behind the vents which hinge open. Gets rid of any petrol fume build up. gordo

;D ;D ;D Mad Max.... nup... more along the lines of an Armagaurd truck Tamper proof screws for when i have to travel south of the border.....Besides the 4 dozen bolts holding the portholes in I may further "Mexican proof" the van by fitting some of that "Crimsafe mesh "that Dick Johnson is pedalling on the telly nowadays. It will have an ëyebrow" of some sort over the door Ray... also thinking of a bit of J mould down the leading edge of the door to create a sort of wind deflector to ward off any water entering through the door gap when its raining and the van is in tow. I have he timber mouldings to form a door jam and i am going to use double sided sponge tape to seal around the jam. Gordon .. i am not sure what i will do for petrol ( or any other fumes ) ventilation. I have one of those "Bowler hat"type alloy vents but i dont wanna spoil the roof line by bunging something like that up top. What ever i fit will have to be capable of being shut off in bad weather so it doesnt suck water into the van..... Stay tuned ... Reddo

Hmm,maybe fit a perspex panel behind hinged vents which makes it weatherproof, and a drop-down mesh screen internally?

Yo all Sorta drifted off the TD the past week or so.. Have been messing with the panelvan doin all sortsa fix ups underneath. Managed to slip over to a van parts place last week and score a hinge open aluminium side window out of a 70s van for $50.00 750mm wide X approx 250mm deep.. It has frosted glass .. smooth on the outside and dimpled on the inside... Outside had about 3 layers of flat white paint on the smooth glass and alloy frame. So i set about cleaning it off with a brass wire wheel in the drill... The black smudges on the glass is where i went a bit heavy handed with the drill... no actual scratch there but the black smudges wont come out with turps etc. I got a product from work called Nitrium Oxide which they add water to and use like a paste to clear scratches from the windows of the trains..... might give that a go and see if i can clear things up... Failing that i will pull the glass out and get a new piece cut... or... maybe have a go at some imitation leadlight ...except using perspex of different colours... Other issue i have been mulling over is what hieght to fit the window.?? I already have an opening that is 750 wide X 160mm deep. Rod the original frame builder must have been considering fitting a small window up high in the front. That is all well and good but if you are lying in bed in the van and you want to look out thye window you would near have to kneel on the bed to see out the high window..... So... what to do here?? Was thinking maybe make the existing opening into a sign with light behind it to illuminate the name of the van .. and then mount the fold open window below it with a short depth awning /visor over the window... All too much fa now.. it will fall into place when i stop thinking about it. Cheers Reddo

Test I picked up these two Jag filler caps at morriset swap.$10 ea One will be the filler neck for the water tank. Other will be a lid that houses the 15 amp extension lead with inboard retractor spool like your mums vacumn cleaner.... Oooo geez .. with the lead hanging out the back the Td might get mistaken for a ply/ally Dyson vac... Anyway.. here is another attempt at posting a photo.. wow... almost ready to throw away the PB training wheels.... Okey dokes... have another go.... I have been scrounging tail lights for a while now. ended up with this lot.. Got the two on the left from a bloke at Hinton a while back.... lenses are good but the chrome surrounds where shabby. Got all the rest of the lenses. the 2 lights on the right, plus the 2 new old stock chrome frames from the Kaybees. Just gotta make a curved ( timber) base to mount em on .. then wire em up.... Nooooooooooooooooo silly... not all of em... just one either side... Cheers Reddo

Looking good Reddo.Seen a similar but slightly larger peak front window somewhere else.Ha. Combo vent/window works well in your design. And those lights will certainly give it a great look. gordo

Awsome work on the teardrop reddo, I also bought a vintage van with the intension of modifing it to carry my vintage bikes. !!! luckily i decided to restore the van first use it for a while then modify it later. I'm glad to say i finished the van intime for the Grande Parade here in Adelaide where it attracted a lot of interest!! Well somehow i dont think i'll be modifing it, its a bit too good to do so now !!! so back to the trailer for the vintage bikes and as yourelf i wonder if i'll start building a a tear drop. !!!!! P.S love your Ariel bikes , i'm also an Ariel man !!!

Ok, Ok, Ok..... So I have been a bit slack... However I have a good excuse.... been away vintage van touring on the Roads and Toasters Tour..... .... ummm. Toads and roaches tour. Went back to work for 4 days and I get a Roster day off... Bloody bewdy Mate... So... wave bye bye to the missus as she heads off to work.... and I head off to the shed of invention to blow the cobwebs off the Tin spud. Last time I looked at it was struggling with how to mount flat taillights on a rounded bum... Most of my previous problems have been solved while sucking on a beer.... so... as part of my rehab I thought I would try thinking without a beer in my hand.. poured a cuppa Coffee and sat looking at the rear of the van... contemplated my navel then moved on down to my feet.... They where a funny purple colour.. I hhave been trying to break in a pair of size 6 TRADELINK thongs on my size 9 feet. Old mate Maurie MRFJ55 had given em to me ages ago..... but at the moment they where cutting off circulation.. so I took one off and give it a squeeze...... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ... just the right density for taillight gaskets... bloody Hell.. Coffee is almost as good as beer for problem solving.. Step one.... Mark out and drill holes to mount the taillights. 2.. Mount taillights Gap at the top about as thick as my pinky ( to clarify.... little finger ) Work out shape of TRADELINK gasket required Then... Out with a white marking pen and a taillight for a template. Rip the straps off one thong and trace the light shape on the bottom... Fire the jigsaw up and hack out the shape.... Set the belt sander upside down in the vice to form a rough sort of linisher .. Feed the thong heel onto the belt and rip the rubber down to the desired shape.... Finish off cold coffee... yuk... thinks...gunna stick with beer from now on.. . Unbolt light and fit TRADELINK gasket Refit and tighten taillight Repeat on right side. Jobs done. and... its only lunch time..... which means PM... which means I am perfectly entitled to a beer. Fiddled on for the arvo with the top shelf above the front window. Have made the opening 1250 wide by 120 high to allow the front mattress to fit in there. Will fit a drop down door on it later on so I can use it as storage when not carting the bike around.... also double as a wardrobe for the Bear suit.. a must for all M/cycle riders... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D By now I was on my 12.....or was it 13th.... oooo geez maybe it was my 14th stubby . Time to get serious ... and sit down at the other end of the van to work out a spot for the spare wheel. I could mount it under the rear of the van on one of those windy uppy downy thingys like on the Holden yoots.. Naaaaa... too nice a wheel to have under the van collecting mud and crud. Besides that the detachable kitchen will be enough counter weight to keep the towball weight manageable... So.. with the slightly longer than vintage vans drawbar I settle on a front mount... hmm.. flat or vertical?? Vertical won ... just have to come up with an A frame to hold it.. or... possibly a broad leather strap around the wheel with a turnbuckle to tension it into place... Will tackle it later... Hey Maurie.. can I get a refund on those thongs?? I reckon I could just about make a size 2 out of the left overs... ;D ;D ;D Adios Amigos Reddo

...hey Reddo, perhaps you can flog them as thongs for barefoot people....... Brilliant ... Kaybee But after much consideration I am gunna have to quote a famous Mexican who once said..... "Works" comes before "looks good", cos "looks good" changes, and "works" works! One can clearly see that even though without straps the modified TRADELINK thongaskets " Look Good".... they are not suited for barefoot people who would like to jog in them.....because "Looks Good" would "Change" once they set about placing one foot in front of the other......leaving the TRADELINK gaske... ummm.. thongs behind and rendering them useless. They simply would not "Work"... ;D ;D ;D ;D However... having said that... There may be a market for "Static barefoot people".. who just wanna stand around and look good in the" limited edition heavily modified...Not for Off Road Use..size 2 -MRFJ55 TRADELINK Double Pluggers" . Man... am I gunna have to get off the Coffee ;D Reddoublepluggerools..ok
