Another fettish I suffer from is the different types of Ice boxes found in Vintage Caravans. As so many of them are getting pulled out to be replaced by refrigerators I thought it would be good to get some photos of them before they become extinct . If you have an ice box in your van please post a photo of it here..... and a hyperlink to the van it's in . 1960 Newcastle (Carapark) caravan1950 Don Caravan1936 “Ol' 36” .... No seals on the door, just relied on the snug fit between the two chamfered edges ........ appears to be fairly common thing on ice boxes Late 1950's “Driftwood” And after restoration 1950's Atlantic caravanAnother Atlantic caravan (my first “free to a good home".. photos of the van have been deleted ) 1951 home made by Wally Ward 'vanWinterwood posted these photos from his 1950/51 bondwood.... Ice goes on the bottom shelf. Cobber.

Home made bondy ] Ice box in fungus's van.... most unusual van, Fungus was asked a few questions..... but he's gone Ice box in Mark T's Wee Kenda?? :-/ (for putting butter in) .... ice on the bottom of the box ? OK Cobber, I'll give you some encouragement in your newest obsession, um sorry, area of investigation. The ice box from a 1955 South Australian 11 ft 6 in Clipper (see Reply #3) now owned by Sportsman1: I've included the left hand photo because you can see the ice box door in the bottom left hand corner (just!). G'day Don R. Thanks for that one.....encouragement is what I need, all contributions are gratefully received . There are only a couple of Ice boxes from those shown so far that have the ice placed in the bottom of the box.... not the most efficient place for it to be placed I would think .... but who knows Cobber.

In a word Cobber..... Cooooooooooooooooool Ice chest cool. in fact .. waaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy cooler than towel rails and slot head screw.\ Both of which do not have a hope in hell of making ya beer cold... I feel it is time that i made our readers aware of the Reddo MK1 "self loading " ice chest i developed in "The shed of Invention"back when i was doin a bit of an upgrade /tidy up on the old old Newcastle van that became known as .. "Rosie". Now people 'tis one thing to boast having a genyouwhine ice chest in the love of your vintage caravanning life ... but to be a total alcoholic and have a fridge that automatically restocks its self... weeelllllllllllllllllllllllll.. that is just plain ecstacy aye... So .. for the benefit of the non believers i will use the wander of electronic imaging .. a wand and my lovely assistant to show you a miracle.. Here we have an unasuming replica beer chest....whats that ya say??.. they can be useed for food as well??.. Struth .. i bet a GIRL came up with that idea... ;D..hhhhhmmmmppph .... mumble grumble.. valueble space lost to lettuce and lentils.. grumble... moan ..whinge... OK... for the purpose of tonights demonstration its a girly ice chest.. not a blokey cold beverage container This shot was taken just before i went for a beer up in the shed... I returned and found this...... It was around easter time folks so i was sorta perpared for a miracle .. but .. nothing as good as this. Materialising beer.. waddya reckon.. a whole lot better than a ghostly image of the virgin Mary appearing in my ice chest at Easter aye boys....sweet as i reckon. Mind you.. the thought of a virgin materialising in my van every now and again sorta appeals to me too ya know Not believing my luck i retired to a safe distance and watched what happend next.... I stood there gob smack...one by one stubbies started arriving and pushing / jostling ta get in the "ice chest". . un-bloody-believable .. See... told ya. Keep em coming Cobber... luv ya work old china ;D

For those who don't know …..or were looking the other way, the above “contribution” from Reddo is taken from a thread I was saving as THE climax to this informative, educational and inspirational exposé on how vintage caravan Ice boxes have been built through the ages, but he has jumped the gun His heart is in the right place. He didn't have an ice box and, being the purist he is, he wanted one. Had this ice box thread existed back then he would have been able to take inspiration from those shown here and construct a replica ice box to be proud of........... instead he went to the shed of demen inspiration and did the next best thing This link to Reddo's thread.... (CLICK HERE) shows how easy it is to remove a three way refrigerator from a modified vintage caravan and replace it with an ice box. There is now no excuse for retaining the modern refrigerator a previous owner installed in your vintage caravan..... PULL IT OUT . Cobber.

Humpty 'n kaybee, thanks fellas that's what we need, photos of both the outside and inside of the ice box. Interesting features in two of them, the ice goes in the shelf on your teardrop one does it humpty.... wouldn't take a full block of ice by the look of it ? And that type of mesh shelf on the Coronet vans box is something we haven't seen before Kaybee....... and does this mean you now own the Coronet ? Cobber.

G'day humpty, Block ice is getting harder to find when you're on the road that's true, more common in Victoria I found. Here's a couple more boxes..... who would have thought there were so many ways to make an ice box....... aye? Ice box on "Mabel".... a van Dosse picked upinside outside And another one in a Re-lax caravanCobber.

G’day all, this is the icebox from our bondie, we think is around 1950 vintage, not real sure of the brand. The drain pipe has a glass bowl in it to stop the air coming back up the pipe, works quite well. As you can see , the original catch is missing. Would anyone out there have a spare, or know someone who has. I would love to get hold of one. Love the sight. John.

G'day John, Would you mind modifying your post and adding a close up photo of the glass bowl you mentioned.... sounds interesting. I have sometimes wondered if putting a "goose neck" in the drain pipe would make any measurable difference to the life of a block of ice . I reckon firefighter has set you right regarding the catch..... shouldn't be too hard to get one to match the original. Cobber.
